BFP’s Opinion: United States Eats Crow Responding To China In The Caribbean

The 2003 decision by the United States to cease providing military aid to Barbados and other Caribbean area nations who refused to sign agreements exempting US troops from prosecution under the International Criminal Court ended up being nothing more that a gift to Communist China.

After the U.S. tried to “punish” Barbados and the other nations, China happily stepped in and showered the Caribbean with military equipment, training and co-operation.

Now, after having left the party in a hissy-fit, the gorgeous but ill-tempered Miss America wants to come back and dance with her old boyfriend. She has announced that she will give Mr. Barbados a kiss and maybe even allow a hand on her knee.

Oh, what excitement! But will Mr. Barbados give up that new Oriental girlfriend and go back with the rich man’s daughter? Who knows!

1. Have These * Fuckers Read Even A Teeny-Tiny Shred of History?
This is precisely what went on during the Cold War - didn't anyone in the State Department pay attention in class?

Unbelievable.

3. The Chinese have helped us build several new
stadia for World Cup Cricket next year. Addtionally Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago and Jamaica have large Chinese populations. Barbados has a very small Chinese population. The original Caribbean Chinese came during the indentureship period after 1840 and many others came in the 1940s and 50s.

In Jamaica, the Chinese control most of the supermarket chains, smaller supermarkets and at least 150 restaurants, hundreds of bakeries and countless patty shops. They have always been involved in commerce and manufacturing. More than a few are involved in the production end of the reggae industry and we have Chinnese politicians in Jamaica, Guyana and Trinidad and Tobago. Trinidad and Tobago had a Trini-Chinese head of State at one time and the Chancellor of Guyana's Judiciary after independence was also Chinese. The Chinese in Jamaica are predominantly catholic and in the early days most of their kids went to the Jesuit College, St Georges. There they learnt cricket and football and produced great footballers and more than a few coaches are linked to clubs today. They also played a lot of basketball in the early days.

The children, grandchildren and grandchildren of the original Caribbean Chinese get very upset when they are viewed as Chinese. They are as Jamaican as everyone else in speech, diet and cultural habits, but even the thousands who have intermarried are very proud of their heritage.

I lived among them for years when I was a University student and got to know them very well.

Since the 1980s there has been a new influx of Chinese who came to work in the free zone but most of them have settled here, married and set up small supermarkets and other businesses.

In the past two years several Chinese have arrived to help refurbish or start building new stadia for the World Cup. The Chinese in the Caribbean are not a new phenomenon.

and the rest of the world.

Wouldn't mind being part of that diplomatic effort.

Barbados is about my favorite place in the whole, wide world.
