In the loft of her house in Newcastle, Barbara Damon-Day spends every morning searching for answers to why her son, National Guard Capt. Patrick D. Damon , died auddenly in Afghanistan on June 15.

I feel very tuned in. Every day, when I get out of bed, I think of a name to call, she said. Its been a very significant part of my grieving.

In Biddeford, in an office at Southern Maine Medical Center, Andrew Schneider spands most days attending to a full schedule of respiratory patients. His son, Army Spc. Matthew E. Schneider, also died unexpectedly and of unknown causes in Iraq on Aug 28.

6. Sudden Unexpected Death is Quite Common

Most people are very surprised to hear that sudden and unexpected death, also known as "sudden cardiac arrest" or "sudden cardiac death", is the number one cause of death in the US and other developed countries. Approximately 1,000 Americans die from it each day, roughly one in seven of all deaths. The media typically calls it a "massive heart attack", but it's quite different than a "clogged arteries" heart attack. It's caused by a disruption of the electrical system in the heart. Most of the time it occurs in people with no known pre-existing heart disease - its victims are often young, e.g., high-school athletes.

Many things can set off a sudden cardiac arrest - one of these is an electrolyte imbalance. Given the hellish temperatures that the soldiers are exposed to, while wearing heavy body armor and gear, it's reasonably easy to throw electrolytes out of whack, hence I'd expect that even more cases than normal.

7. The odds of thousands dying among hundreds of millions in an

aging population where disease will be a factor does not equal or explain the deaths of young, healthy troops. The armed forces population does not compare to the general population.

Total of 400,000 or so per year.

It even happens to young athletes - a pro basketball player and a pro football player died of this just in the last year. These are people who are fit as can be, and get lots and lots of scrutiny from the medical community.

The number of deaths reported amongst the soldiers just doesn't strike me as particularly out of line.
