Tuesday, October 10, 2006

E-MAIL STORY PRINTER FRIENDLY VERSION
BAGHDAD, Iraq — A fire broke out at an ammunition depot at a U.S. base in southeast Baghdad on Tuesday night, setting off a series of explosions, the U.S. military said. There were no immediate reports of casualties.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, said Lt. Col, Christopher C. Garver, a military spokesman.

Blasts from the ammunition in the depot at Forward Operating Base Falcoln went off for at least a half hour and were felt several miles away. Helicopters were seen flying over the area.

Authorities are "trying to determine the cause or any threat to the population," Garver said, adding that there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Haiku is three lines of five, seven, and five syllables, respectively.

6. And today's new war word is "cooking off".
In a CNN report where a reporter actually commented about the children being awakened in the night from the blasts (thousands of children are dead and are seldom mentioned on CNN), CNN has used the word "cooking off" a couple thousand times. They love it when they tell us something new.

Blasts rock central Baghdad
11 October 2006

UPDATED REPORT - 2.15pm
"The Islamic Army... (launched) rockets and mortar bombs... at a base for the occupying American forces. Explosions could be heard in Baghdad," said the statement signed by the group and posted on a Web site often used by Islamist militants.

The Islamic Army in Iraq is one of a number of militant groups operating in Iraq and has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on US-led forces as well as the kidnap and murder of several foreign contractors.

Iraqiya state television showed pictures of a huge fire lighting up the night sky.

Reuters reporters in central Baghdad heard more than 30 explosions, which began at about 11 pm (9am New Zealand time).

The Interior Ministry said the blasts had shaken three neighbourhoods close to Forward Operating Base Falcon in the southern district of Doura.
