Why is Keith Olbermann a "liberal"?
Someone described him that way today to me, and it pisses me off.

Keith is conservative. He wants to conserve the US Constitution and the rights of its citizens; he believes (I think) that traditional, conservative ideas like the separation of powers, and that of church and state, are valid.

It's W and crew who are the true "liberals". Taking a liberal with the rule of law and its application. Applying his own interpretation to centuries-old legal precedence "liberally". "Liberally" spending our children's wealth on tax breaks for the wealthiest of the wealthy, and using the "liberal" concept of reform to reform our imperfect democracy into a police state.

I must be getting conservative in my old age :D

1. Only because the small-minded need those little boxes for people
And they can only handle two: "liberal" and "conservative."

Pity, isn't it.

2. Because he tells the truth, and reality has a known liberal bias

3. Hey, wait!
Why smear the word "liberal" like that? I like the word! Liberal--as in liberty. As in liberal acceptance of people conservatives don't tend to accept.

I picture a liberal as having a heart overflowing to do good in the world. Liberally spreading help to people who need it, liberally caring for people without strings attached.

A liberal is a forward thinker, while a conservative clings to the past. A liberal is not against change when needed, but a conservative resists change no matter what.

I picture liberals as being open-minded, reflective, interested in new ideas, contemplative of history but not trying to relive it, and respectful of other people's views. I picture liberals as having a passion for the common good and being willing to do what it takes to reach it.

I wouldn't want to see liberals ditch the word without a fight. It's a great word. Keith should be proud to be called a liberal. It's a good thing.

5. yes it is
but the original point was that preserving the Constitution against radical change is conservative.

the labels have been totally trashed. nobody knows what they really mean. They might as well be Cubs/White Sox, or Bears/Packers.

they have been trashed by the simple-minded monosyllabic grunts on talk radio and tv.

todays conservatives are not what Goldwater was, they are the modern-day manifestation of the KKK - a hate-filled clique just trying to look out for their interests and more than happy to shoot, hang, pillory, or hurl invective at anyone not a sworn member of the clique: Blacks, Jews, Gays (sound like the nazis?) and anyone who professes to accept any of those groups.

The only thing they seek to "conserve" is their bigoted, self-centered view of the world.

Thus KO is labelled a liberal because he is not wearing a sheet and pointy hat.

7. You're right, the labels have been trashed
I'm sure Junior would consider his ideas "progressive" and "forward-thinking'.

Where he fails miserably is in these definitions of "liberal" (from Dictionary.com):

-characterized by generosity and willingness to give in large amounts

-open-minded or tolerant

-favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, esp. as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.

6. Well, Keith has what Repuke fundy asshole dont have...
..A nack for "Telling it like it is", were as NeoCons have a nack for "Lying their asses off." Anyone that is not on the Repuke sinking ship is a "Liberal", even moderate conservatives are "Liberal."

Anyone with commonsence and who is also fair as well as balanced is "Liberal." So, if doing the right thing is tagged as "Liberal", so be it..I would rather be called a Liberal then a Conservative anyday.
