14. Credible bidders?
Most of these bidders don't seem creditworthy. They just have a few bids to their name for a few cheap items-- probably bidding while drunk.

If I was the seller I wouldn't be too happy if these jokers were the winners. Time will tell, I guess.

9. iT'S going to be replaced with another
'The portrait, which depicts Stephen standing by his fireplace and in front of a previous portrait, will be replaced with a new portrait, which depicts Stephen standing by his fireplace, in front of a previous portrait, in front of a previous portrait. At least one critic has already heralded the Stephen Colbert Portrait Series as “the equivalent of the Genius Grant, the Fibonacci Sequence, and ‘The DaVinci Code’ combined.”"

It's even more egocentric than before. Also there is a fire in the fireplace and you can see his hands. Other than that it is very similar.

What The Critic says:
While certainly not the first work to champion metastasis, assymetry, topography, decay, multiplicity, and, crucially, mischief in the quadrolinear plane-- and let's not resign the vanguard to mere chronology, for Clobbmann's "Auto-Clobb" did exemplify this alchemy quite potently, and more than twelve years ago-- the "Colbert" is truly, irrefutably, a masterwork: colorist in its flair, theorist in its proclivity, dadaist in its zeitgeist. If there's one painting you buy on eBay this year...

Four bidders over two million. This can't be real. I mean, I'd like to have this - but come on. If someone is messing with this donation to Save the Children, they should be ashamed.

On the other hand, it will be all over the news if this is actually real. I just can't believe it is.

On edit: This site says that any bid over $15,000 must be accompanied by a valid credit card or verifiable identity. I don't "ebay" so I initially assumed, foolishly perhaps, that there was some kind of quality control to prevent false bids. Guess not.

tonight when he thanked his audience for the success of the last year. He tried to do something good by donating the portrait to benefit a children's charity.

I remember when that guy sold his ex-wife's wedding dress. That was a really funny auction - he posted a lot of hilarious Q&A while it was running - but then idiots drove up the bid just like for this one and eBay had to cull them.

Colbert will give it all to Save the Children. What a sweetheart.

Most of these big bids are frauds. You and I both know it. But according to eBay rules, you have to give the second-highest bid a chance, and if that goes, the third-highest...

I wonder how many bids this will have to go before they find someone willing to pay real money.

57. nothing really.
The person that started the auction can file a complaint with eBay and there is a small chance that ebay will delete that persons account. If the auction ends with the fake bid the seller can give the fake buyer a negative feedback. Thats pretty much the extent of it.

These people suffer from internet asshole syndrome. They get to say and do whatever they want without having to show their cawordly face. I would love to run into one of these fucktards on the street.

45. Damn and I was thinking of bidding...
It says bidders must be pre-approved, and also there have been several administrative cancellations of bids, but still, there's no way someone actually bid 10,000,000. My guess is that there will be a few more administrative cancellations. I don't think it's freepers, I think it's more likely overzealous young Colbert fans...

The new portrait is quite nice, he said he's going to add another Stephen every year!

51. I find most everything he does inordinately amusing.....
I just love the guy - my husband doesn't get it at all, but I guess some people get satire, others don't. He had me after the WH Correspondent's dinner, and I don't think I've missed a show since...well, since I discovered it was on a Canadian Channel we got, up until we finally got Comedy Central last month.

I've also watched a lot of the old shows on YouTube, and I've read interviews. Stephen seems to be just an inherently decent man, who is also a brilliant comedian - sort of like Jon Stewart, but different. What amazes me is that so many of his fans are teenagers, and I'm 51 years old!

55. I was pleased when they started carrying it in Canada, too!
I originally heard about Jon Stewart's show from friends up here (it's on the CTV channel at midnight, and for those with cable, on the Canadian version of the Comedy Network at 11). Due to public demand they put both shows on CTV -- I guess Colbert heard about it because he actually welcomed Canadian viewers to the show, last year!

Though it hurts to admit it, Colbert has a broader range of skills and is probably more creative than our nearest equivalent up here (Rick Mercer) -- sure, Mercer came up with the infamous "petition for Stockwell Day to change his name to Doris" campaign, but Colbert has more shows per week (and has to stay in character yet not become predictable).

I admit that I was a tiny bit disappointed that there wasn't an encore of the tumbling routine earlier this week, when Amy Sedaris pitched her book on the Daily Show!

Funny about the fan age spans -- I'm almost 39, and earlier this year I had to work on a project with my boss's teenaged son. His mom later told me that "he came home raving about the fact that you know about Stephen Colbert".

58. I'm not sure Jon tumbles! Maybe Stephen will have her on again.
I'm in the Buffalo area, about 20 minutes from Canada, and I found out accidentally it was on a Canadian station (our basic cable didn't carry it). I was thrilled when I found that out, and I was watching the midnight shows until we got Direct TV when Time-Warner took over our cable co.

The age span cracks me up - There's a new messageboard at Colbertnation.com (not the official Comedy Central one), and I'd say the average age of posters is around 17 because a lot of them aren't old enough to get into a taping. And there are a LOT of posters. That's why I think they're the ones who bid on the painting on ebay.

My 18 year old nephew is a fan, so is my 39 year old brother, so he does seem to span the ages.

I have to admit I never heard of Rick Mercer, but I do love your country. I often think how nice it is that it's just a 20 minute drive to a nice, peaceful country!
