1. "New highs"
Well, assuming there's still some semblance of upward movement, every high from here on out is going to be a "new high," even if the Dow only gains a point.

And the NASDAQ still has a ways to go anyway.

2. And still over 20% below its record high, after inflation.
No offense to you, OP, but :boring:

13. It's Worse Than That
The Dow has historically yielded returns about 4 times inflation. So, in reality, over nearly 6 full years, the Dow should be up nearly 55%, and should be about 19,000. So, this is not anything to celebrate. It just means it sucks a little less.

4. These artificial numbers are meaningless to Americans
yes gas prices are down from a couple of months ago and we have record stock market, but Americans still feel, according to polls, that the economy sucks. In the CBS poll yesterday of Ohio--more than half said the major issue of the campaign is not Iraq or terrorism but the economy with health care following. Too many people have to work two or more jobs just to make ends meet.

6. This is not particularly good. It's the ONLY thing that is up.
The housing market continues to free fall here in Phoenix, and a crash is just around the corner.

7. What's good for Wall St. is not necessarily good for Main St.
From my perspective - facing healthcare costs that are eating up more and more of my income - this means absolutely NOTHING to me.

10. The Dow only reflects the price of 40 blue chip stocks
and not necissarily the market as a whole. NASDAQ and S&P are still lower than they were in 2001, they reflect a broader market.

12. What ever goes up must come down..
IT's going to be a big crash. This economy can't support the dow so high. It will fail.

15. It's Clinton's fault
If the GOP can blame him for everything bad that's ever happened in their reign then they need to blame Clinton for the good stuff too.

16. The Dow is meaninless. It just means corporations are enjoying
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 02:42 PM by GreenTea
the huge Bush tax cuts, outsourcing of cheap labor overseas, getting higher prices for goods, while American workers are working more hours for less pay and benefits, As well as Bush's wars creating more corporate profits for the corporations.

The Dow means nothing to us as workers...
