outing and smoking
those are the two most important subjects here on the day (and the day after) habeas corpus was gutted like a slaughterhouse pig?

sheesh, people . . .

3. I don't think people -- DUers included -- realize how bad this could be
I think the torture law is unenforceable and will smash apart when it hits the Supremes. However, a lot of people could already have been "disappeared" by then.

Here's a scenario for you: Against all odds, the 'Licans sweep the elections November 7, even increasing their majorities. Clearly it's rigged, and people fill the streets demanding a reversal of the phony results. Thousands are rounded up, which leads to more cycles of increasingly intense civil disobedience.

Then the boy king orders the US Military to start rounding up "terrorist ringleaders."

What happens next?

7. Check your local military bases . . . they're not exactly deserted.
Besides, we don't need all those troops in South Korea -- could bring them home in a hurry for riot duty. And there's always what's left of the National Guard (although they might think twice about letting the Guard get access to their weapons, since they might not be considered "reliable" enough.)

5. And as bad as its on DU
its so much worse in the real world.

Went to lunch with some coworkers yesterday-most depressing conversation ever. Coworker1 is a news junkie and activist and is very scared about all this. Coworker 2 is a European who just came to the US and has observed the madness from outside and is shocked by it all.
Coworkers 3,4,5 and 6 are clueless. 3,4 and 5 don't even read the news and have no idea wtf we are talking about. Coworker 6 follows stuff somewhat but his response to this bill is:
"It doesn't really affect people like us".

8. I was on a business trip with my husband last month.
It was embarrassing because the Europeans didn't want to mention Bush in front of us. Sort of like referring to your brother-in-law arrested for raping little kids. The Canadians were more forthcoming. They just couldn't hold in their absolute bafflement that a guy like Bush is running things here.

Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 11:06 AM by Sapere aude
challenged. Of course the repubs don't pay attention to the decisions of the SCOTUS which is one of the reasons the right is losing power in this country.

I think the more they over reach the worse it is for them and potentially good for us.
In the not to distant future, when the country looks back on these past 6 years, it will see just how close we came to losing our democracy for good and will think twice before allowing an administration like this to come to power. Bush Cheney will be held in contempt in the minds of most Americans.

13. I'm not so sure I agree with either point
as for the SCOTUS--
step 1. pretty much any repuke accuses you of "aiding the terrorists" (that's already happening daily)

step 2. an administration sanctioned agent (pretty much any repuke) says that anyone who "aids the terrorists" has no right to be a citizen
(that's already happening today)

step 3. you are declared an "enemy combatant," taken into custody and disappeared.

Constitutional challenges are problematic for three reasons:
1. you have no access to counsel.
2. any lawyer making such a challenge would likely be said to be "aiding the terrorists"
3. the courts are dominated by repukes

All this is possible according to the language of the law. Welcome to the new Fascist State of Murka.

As for overreaching--
they have shifted the political spectrum so radically far to the right in this country that I don't think most people realize where we started. Plus, they may just have "reached' themselves into a de facto empire.

I'm sorry some people out there are so dim they'll use their vote on one periphery issue rather than on topics that truly affect everybody.

23. From what I saw yesterday most of those posts
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 12:50 PM by nam78_two
were by anti-anti-smokers rather than the anti-smoking "nazis"

Maybe there was a deluge before that but then I missed it...

I am not a smoker, neither am I an anti-smoker, but even barring the gutting of Habeas Corpus, I find it a bit silly when either side seems to feel SO victimized by the other...

I would think these people:
http://www.bread.org/learn/hunger-basics/hunger-facts-international.html

have more serious problems ;). Or homeless people, people who have been laid off, elderly people with no means of support, people with serious illnesses, people in war zones and so on .....

Not being able to smoke in bars or not being able to go to a bar without finding smokers in there, both seem kinda trivial by comparison :P.
We are very pampered people in the West in general :)...The things that seem like extreme afflictions to us would probably be very amusing to someone living on less than a dollar a day and hoping to fend off starvation for another week.
