Another Worst Top 10 Congressmen List - Rolling Stone Magazine
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 12:33 PM by RobertSeattle
Corrected: 9 R's - 1 D - Hastert is #1.

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/story/12054520/the_10_worst_congressmen/1

Hastert could well be the weakest House speaker in history. Tapped by Tom DeLay to serve as the mild-mannered frontman for the GOP leadership, the former wrestling coach ceded most of his power to the now-disgraced majority leader, allowing Republicans to treat the Capitol as their private piggy bank. Last year, Hastert got in on the action himself, secretly inserting $207 million into the budget for the "Prairie Parkway" -- a highway that will speed development of 210 acres he owns in Illinois. Before the year was out, Hastert sold part of his land -- soon to be the site of a sprawling subdivision -- for a profit of $2 million.

"Here's a guy who saw a chance to profit from his official acts and took it," says Bill Allison, who uncovered the late-night earmark as a senior analyst for the Sunlight Foundation, a nonpartisan watchdog group. "Most of us aren't speaker of the House, and most of us don't have a $200 million earmark running through our back yard. Hastert does, and he made a fortune from it."

The speaker at least functions as a bipartisan defender of congressional corruption. In February 2005, he purged the chairman of the House Ethics Committee for daring to admonish DeLay. And after Rep. William Jefferson's offices were raided by the FBI last spring, it was Hastert who lodged the strongest protest on the Louisiana Democrat's behalf.

8. CO is no slouch in the "worst congressman" dept., and it's a smaller state
I knew CO was screwed up when I saw its governor talking to the media after Columbine, whining that it was against the law to bring guns to school! What a dolt.

Then there's the fiasco of Jean Benet~. There are states more screwed up than CO, but CO is on a faster track to "Screwdom."

13. There's another repuke asshole in CA named
Elton Gallegly, who supposedly "represents" my area. I'm sorry there wasn't room for him on the list because he's a complete Bush Crime Family rubber stamp and toady. Someone once devoted a post here to how he throws Dems out of his office. Won't even give them the courtesy of a short meeting with his staff.

He announced his retirement this year, but there wasn't time for the repukes to come up with another option, so he got back into it. No ethics. No principles. The emptiest of empty suits. And he'll win with around 65% of the vote. He always does. The people in Ventura County are among the biggest morons on earth.

18. The problem with this list, of course, is
there's no way to just stop at 10.

definitely should be on a 50-worst list:
Tom Reynolds (R-NY)
Rick Renzi (R-AZ)
Zach Wamp (R-TN)
David Dreier (R-CA)
Trent Franks (R-AZ)
J.D. Hayworth (R-AZ)
Orrin Hatch (R-UT)
John Mica (R-FL)

24. Although I had heard of some of these people before
until I read all ten capsules of their "careers," I had no idea of just how bad it could be. I mean - thecorruption and general greed makes some sort of sense to me ( by which I mean, it's wrong but it still falls in the general frame of recognizably human failings) - but to get an endorsement from the KKK like Musgrave is beyond all comprehnesion. I get the feeling that someone like Tancredo would like to run through the streets randomly shooting people. I mean, if these 10 bozos were thrown out tomorrow and 10 repeat felons ( at least 5 of whom were declared deeply disturbed) were sent directly from sentencing to the House of Representatives, I don't think anyone would notice.
