1. Only if they don't get any civil rights out of it. (n/t)

2. Figures.
So no legal or civil equal rights for gay marriage.

And for that he can say he "supports" it?

Sheesh.

3. hmm, i highly doubt it, he is running and he just made up with the

6. I swear, I just sat down & flipped on the TV and there was McCain
on MSNBC telling Tweety that he supports gay marriage.

I thought I'd lost my mind.

8. i just read on a comment below that he supports it but he really doesn't
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 06:48 PM by chimpsrsmarter
what a joke he is, i think McCain has been divorced before so he's got some gall telling people the hetero marriage should be a sacred thing between a man and woman when in his own life it wasn't so sacred.

4. Yes he did. But as usual he spoke out of both sides of his mouth..
which why I always refer to him as a two-headed snake.

He says that heterosexuals should have a unique status. But that gays should be allowed to get married too. :wtf:

9. The old myth of 'separte but equal' like segregated schools.
Problem is there's no such thing as separate but equal.

McCain is snake all right. 2 headed indeed.

19. Maybe Everybody Should Get A Civil Union
If you want to get married go to a church, synagogue, or mosque.

I'm good with that. The Government should be neutral
and have the same laws apply across the board--and the churches can do what they want.

11. Like what kind of unique status?
Do my wife & I get, like a secret handshake or something? Maybe a special "unique status" marriage card?

His handlers are probably groaning that the last 2 years of sucking up to the fundies was just washed down the tubes with that comment, though.

17. He just had a vision of Jerry Falwell's giant head exploding and
reversed himself. He was before it before he was against it. We should use this against him if he runs.

18. I suspect that what McCain *really* believes and what he says
on TV to get the fundy vote are 2 separate things and that means he's THE LOWEST of the low.

21. Yep. Reminds me of the line in Tombstone when Doc tells Wyatt..
'ha ha, that's what I like about Wyatt. He can talk himself into anything....' The same goes for McCain. He is a political whore. Period.

5. If It's Performed By A Non-Government Entity.
Could you square the circle by having gay marriages and straight marriages.

It seems the biggest objection is by those who say marriage is between a man and a woman. Can they be satisfied by given straight marriage certificates while gay folks get gay marriage certificates or is that discrimination in and of itself.

I'm searching for an answer.

Of course I support gay marriage. I don't know how to make it into law.

14. She's not.
She doesn't want an abortion either, but McCain (despite his pro-life stance) told reporters he'd let his daughter have an abortion if she wanted one.

And I do remember McCain saying he was "pro-life" (anti-choice) but it would be up to his daughter what she wanted to do if she had an unplanned pregnancy.

What a disconnect.

22. NOBODY wants to force ANY church to perform a marriage against its faith.
Edited on Wed Oct-18-06 06:58 PM by TahitiNut
This is really what the kneejerk religionists are pretending to oppose. When words like 'sanctity' are used, the discussion belongs in a church or temple, not in the secular sphere. I don't know of any law that imposes some requirement on any religion to perform marriages they don't approve of. The only laws I've ever heard of were ones that prohibited churches from performing marriages that didn't meet some secular conditions. Why aren't they arguing about keeping the laws off their churches? Because the 'established' churches have prohibited people, by using the FORCE of law, from exercising their own faith traditions - including nterracial marriages in the past and gender today. Then there's polygamy.

It's an appallingly deceitful monopolization of the public discourse.
