In a G.O.P. Stronghold, 3 Districts in Indiana Are Now Battlegrounds
Indiana, so heavily Republican that it has not voted for a Democratic presidential candidate since 1964, has become an unexpected battleground in this year’s Congressional elections.

Three of the state’s seven Republican members of Congress are locked in tough races, with the campaigns drawing big money and big names from both parties, including President Bush, Laura Bush, Barbara Bush, former President Bill Clinton and Senator Barack Obama, Democrat of Illinois.

Ed Feigenbaum, editor of The Indiana Legislative Insight, a nonpartisan newsletter, said the situation reflected the nation’s souring mood.

“People are unhappy everywhere,” Mr. Feigenbaum said. “And incumbents suffer when they think the country is heading in the wrong direction.”
