Our Constitution keeps our country thriving, Lynne Cheney tells students

LOUISVILLE - Lynne Cheney held up her book "America" (Note: Available for sale in the cafeteria, next to "Sisters"?) and told about 120 elementary school students that despite a terrorist attack five years ago, the country is still thriving.

Cheney, the wife of Vice President Dick Cheney, credited the U.S. Constitution with giving the country the strength to move on during a speech Monday to students from two Louisville-area schools as part of National Constitution Day.

She quoted "America the Beautiful" in the opening of her book - "O beautiful for patriot dream, That sees beyond the years, Thine alabaster cities gleam, Undimmed by human tears!"

"It's still true," Cheney said. "Even though they hurt the towers, our alabaster cities do gleam."

9. Yes she does
Recently, Mrs. Cheney has written three books of American history for children. The first, America: A Patriotic Primer, released in May 2002, is an alphabet book for children of all ages and their families that celebrates the ideas and ideals that are the foundations of our country. The second, A Is for Abigail: An Almanac of Amazing American Women, published September 2003, tells the story of women's contributions to American history. Her third, When Washington Crossed the Delaware: A Wintertime Story for Young Patriots, released in October 2004, is a straightforward yet elegant retelling of the dramatic military campaign that began on Christmas night, 1776. Mrs. Cheney's net proceeds from her three best-selling books are being donated to charity. Mrs. Cheney’s most recent book is A Time for Freedom: What Happened When in America, released in October 2005.
