Newsweek Says 55% of U.S. Public Plans to Vote for Democrats

By Neil Roland

Oct. 21 (Bloomberg) -- By a 55-to-37 percent margin, Americans who say they are likely to vote in the Nov. 7 elections plan to cast their ballots for Democratic candidates, according to a new Newsweek poll.

The Democrats have gained among both white Catholics and white evangelicals in the last two years, the poll released today showed. Among independents, 44 percent favor the Democrat in their district while 34 percent prefer the Republican candidate.

Democrats need a net gain of 15 seats to win control of the House and six to gain control of the Senate. While President George W. Bush has predicted that the Republicans will keep their congressional majorities, former House Majority Leader Richard Armey, a Texas Republican, said yesterday that Democrats may gain a majority of 10 seats in the House.

In the Newsweek poll, Bush's approval rating is at 35 percent, with 57 percent of Americans saying they disapprove of his performance. In an all-time low in the survey, 65 percent of Americans said the U.S. is losing ground in efforts to build security and democracy in Iraq.

Asked to name the issue that is most important to their vote, 31 percent of respondents cited Iraq, 18 percent said the economy and 16 percent said health care.

6. What's needed is for the 55% to show up and the 45% to....
... p*** off.

If the polls were slanted towards the GOP then it might give us a better indication of what is going on. I've seen opinion polls that were quite wrong: the Kerry one could have been one of them (though in my mind the jury is still out on that one). I know the BBC got it wrong in 1992 when they predicted John Smith and the Labour Party would get into power by just a small margin, but it turned out John Major kept the Conservatives in power for another miserable 5 years by a thin majority. What happened in 1997 because of Major's mishaps, sleaze, corruption was a political earthquake with Tony Blair coming into office.

It's about time for an American political earthquake. I hope the American people are so fed up of the GOP that if they're inclined to vote Democratic that they'll come out and vote... and if they can't bring themselves to vote Democratic that they just stay home, or in my words just piss off.

Mark.

7. Will 55% be enough?
I know 51% is a 'mandate':eyes: according to the Repubs, but I'd like to see a larger margin just to be on the safe side...

8. 55 to 37 should be enough
If the rest of the voters split down the middle, it will be 59/41 ...and that's enough so that Diebold can't steal it.

9. So the GOP only needs to adjust the results by 20 points? No problem
That's a mere 10% of the vote shifted, heck, flip a few bits here and there, lose a few million ballots, purge a few milliion minority voters, few will notice, and those who do notice won't be able to prove a thing, or they'll be effictively marginalized if they can. Problem solved, another "miracle turnout by conservative voters" saves the day, and we can all go back to watching American Idol or whatever other bread-and-circus fools' gold can be trotted out to appease the apathetic short-memory masses.

Maybe it's not the landslide victory the RNCC was hoping for back in 2005, but will any of us *really* be surprised if the house and senate stay under republican leadership after the election?

10. How can any TRUE Independent voter..........
vote Republican right now? :wtf: Do these "Independents" live in a freaking vacuum? Have they no idea what's been going on in our country and abroad for the past 6 years?
I don't believe these "Independent" voter numbers. Either these people are "independent" from any critical thought patterns or they're stealth right leaning morans intent upon skewing poll numbers to mask the Reich-Wing's trickery.
Bah! I suspect all polls anyway. Exit polls that are completely wrong? Polls showing Democrats making huge inroads only to be proved wrong at election time? The only thing that matters is the vote count on November 8 and Diebold has more to say about that than the voters do.

16. How does it break down? That's the question.
Is the sample representative of the nation as a whole? In that case, we may be looking at a skew towards the larger cities. If that's the case, it doesn't mean much.

It's going to take a killer GOTV effort this year to win the House. The races in rural districts are way too close for comfort and can easily be stolen through supression and other Republican shenanigans when the margins are thin. Blackwell proved this in Ohio only two years ago.

We have to aim for a super-majority this time so they can't supress us out of power. Remember 2004.

19. 55% does not sound like enough
but it is better against 37% than against 45%

We have been winning in the past, but it ends up losing because of the districts.
http://www.dailyhowler.com/

"Combining the last three Senate elections, Democrats have actually won two-and-a-half million more votes than Republicans. Yet they now hold only 44 seats in that 100-person chamber because Republicans dominate the less populous states that are so heavily over-represented in the Senate."

20. Keep Working Until Election And Beyond
Health care is a vital issue for all good people, the
ones who are trying for justice in the world. It's a matter
of what you eat and drink, but also your heart has to be in
the right place politically, whether you vote or not.
I haven't decided where to go for sure on election day,
but mainly I think I'll wind up where I can hope for a good
outcome.
Health permitting, I'll try to keep up the writing until
the election, and after that things are uncertain. Good Luck.
