THE SECURE FENCE ACT OF 2006- 700 MILES, 2-6 BILLION $$$$$$$$$$
Edited on Thu Oct-26-06 08:29 PM by Jcrowley
Today the President signs the Secure Fence Act of 2006. It calls for the government to build a 700-mile barrier along a stretch of the U.S.-Mexican border. What the bill doesn't provide is the money to pay for it. And oh, it will be expensive. The cost estimates range from $2.2 to $6 billion. Most of that will have to be appropriated in future budget bills.

Bush signs a bill to build a 700-mile fence along the Mexican border
By Dave Montgomery
McClatchy Newspapers

WASHINGTON - President Bush signed legislation on Thursday to create a 700-mile border fence that would stretch along a third of the 2,000-mile U.S.-Mexico border.

The barrier is to be constructed in tandem with a high-tech surveillance network known as the Secure Border Initiative, which the Boeing Corp. is developing for the Department of Homeland Security.

3. Dangerous children
The title of this piece of crap should be the Private Security Contractors Slush Fund Act of Forever. But the children in DC call it by their pre-pubescent Orwellian moniker.

Lord of the Flies in Amerika.

2. What do you want to bet...
...that this is a sop to Congress and the Repubs and it won't ever come to fruition?

I mean, there's no funding, it won't work, and the need for it is probably going to be moot within a few years...

7. Immigration 101 for beginners and non-Texans.
From Molly Ivins, back in March

In 1983, I was a judge at the Terlingua Chili Cookoff, and my memory of the events may not be perfect -- for example, for years I've been claiming Jimmy Carter was president at the time, but that's the kind of detail one often loses track of in Terlingua.

Anyway, it was '83 or some year right around there when we held The Fence climbing contest. See, people talked about building The Fence back then, too. The Fence along the Mexican border. To keep Them out.

At the time, the proposal was quite specific -- a 17-foot cyclone fence with bob wire at the top. So a test fence was built at Terlingua, and the First-Ever Terlingua Memorial Over, Under or Through Mexican Fence Climbing Contest took place. Prize: a case of Lone Star beer.

Winning time: 30 seconds.

I tell this story to make the one single point about the border and immigration we know to be true: The Fence will not work. No fence will work. The Great darn Wall of China will not work. Do not build a fence. It will not work. They will come anyway. Over, under or through.

9. I know how to save big $$$$$$
Hire illegal aliens to build it! The Mexicans work cheap and we don't have to pay benefits, retirement, or medical. And from what I hear, they work as hard as any white person.

Non-union, sub-minimum wage, and when we are done with them just send them home!

12. Found a photo of Bechtel's proposed fencing
This particular section was estimated to cost $33.6 million. Unforeseen circumstances caused some minor cost overruns.
