Election Error Stems From Programmers

FAYETTEVILLE -- An error in the paper audit that records votes cast in the coming election originated from the programmers of the touch screen voting terminals, Washington County election officials said Thursday.

The error did not affect the way votes cast were tallied and was not the result of an error made by county election workers, said John Logan Burrow, chairman of the Washington County Election Commission.

The error was noticed Wednesday by the Republican candidate for 92nd district state representative seat, Cephus Richard III, who was voting early. Richard noticed the paper audit beside the touch screen listed his district incorrectly.

Election workers sent the devices programmed incorrectly off Thursday morning to be corrected. Early voting was not shut down and will continue until Nov. 6.
