US general: Iraqis not wired to embrace unity

http://www.wilmingtonstar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061026/NEWS/610260376/-1/State

<snip>

J.D. Thurman, the major general who is the senior commander of U.S. forces in Baghdad, has figured out the obstacle to America's dream for Iraq.

"Part of our problem is that we want this more than they do," Thurman told The New York Times, alluding to American efforts to unify Iraqis. "We need to get people to stop worrying about self and start worrying about Iraq."

1. Hard to worry about "Iraq" when your "self" is getting shot to bits every stinking day
and your children are getting shot to bits, and you can't get out to get food, or water, and there's no electricity and it's 110 degrees in the shade....

:grr:

This statement is just outrageous! And these are the losers directing this hellhole?! Jesus fucking christ, this guy is just NOW having these insights?

3. Maybe if we up the death rate from 400/day to 500/day
they will start behaving more to our liking?

It is odd that we think the Iraqis ought to forge a single united state when we maintain the fiction of a union of 50 independent states and fought a huge bloody civil war of our own while sorting out our own regional/cultural/economic differences.

4. I seriously hate this "they have been fighting and killing each other
for 1000 years" canard. If so why isn't Saudi Arabia or Syria (majority Sunni) at war with Iran (majority Shia). Iraqis were not fighting each other before we went and created schisms over there.
