CIA interrogation of KSM described, waterboarding, threatened harm to children

http://www.spiegel.de/international/0,1518,445117,00.html

<snip>

SPIEGEL ONLINE: And what happened to Khalid Shaikh Mohammed?

Suskind: He was really the prize. He is the 9/11 operational planner, a kind of general in the al-Qaida firmament. He was water-boarded, hot and cold, all matter of deprivations, beatings, threats. He told us some things, but frankly things that professional interrogators say could have been gotten otherwise.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: With waterboarding, the prisoner is made to feel as though he is drowing, even if he isn't really at risk of dying. There are reports that Mohammed was a kind of unoffical record-holder when it came to waterboarding.

Suskind: With extraordinary minutes passing he earned a sort of grudging respect from interrogators. The thing they did with Mohammed is that we had captured his children, a boy and a girl, age 7 and 9. And at the darkest moment we threatened grievous injury to his children if he did not cooperate. His response was quite clear: "That's fine. You can do what you want to my children, and they will find a better place with Allah."

1. That's nothing to be proud of ...

Shame on our country for condoning / legalizing torture. These are dark days, indeed.

To all you "24" adoring a**holes, this is reality of torture: You get little to nothing of importance.

Interrogation does NOT equal torture except in your inexperienced, deluded minds from watching far too many FICTIONAL TV episodes of barf-bag shows such as "24."

What part of FICTION do you NOT understand?

I've had the opportunity to enjoy the acquaintance of many Army Interrogators. The hype promoted in "24" is just that: hype with no delivery.

4. To people who are trained in the Methods of Interrogation ...
These shows are a sad testament of how HYPE becomes reality. Unfortunately, in the real world, such testosterone effusions only tend to get people killed or maimed - work against the mission.

They call it INTELLIGENCE for a reason. Gleaning useful information from prisoners is a both a skill and a talent.

Using coercion should be one of the LAST resort methods. And realize that when you cross that line, you will have to TORTURE your prisoner in the future ... for even the damn time of day. Once you've breeched that line of respect, they would rather die than give you any information that you need. Even when tortured, they are going to give you "the cover story" that you WANT to hear, not the truth.

but frankly things that professional interrogators say could have been gotten otherwise.

The most important quote - right there.

6. Yes, with a little patience and finesse that information, and perhaps more.
But you see, in BushWorld, anything that involves talk without swagger is for "girlie-men."

Anything that doesn't seemingly involve *Blunt Force Trauma* is, to the Neo-Conservatives, a sign of weakness.

Our Dear Leader, The War President will NOT compromise nor even talk with terrorists. Note: A terrorist is anyone who disagrees with The Executive Branch. :(

7. If you have bought the ticking bomb excuse
why would you not also subscribe to slaughtering innocent children? After all, that bomb could go off at any moment and your prisoner might know where it is. Once you have crossed the line on torture the slope down toward outright atrocities is very steep and slippery.

10. What kind of people would we be if we didn't hold the Bush Regime accountable?
What would that say about us? about America?
