Especially if it's a relative. You will not convince them at all, and they will respond to your efforts to poke holes in their bubble of denial by hurling insults at you like, "how can you believe all of those LIES???" and be admonished not to believe the liberal media, who all want to "Bash Bush".

1. I have no problem bashing bush
My hate is rational because I am intellectually curious and do research and neat shit that conservatives know nothing about. They don't want to know stuff, they just want to believe stuff and are way too proud to admit they have been bent over and fucked by the fake cowboy for 6 years.

No WMD? Wow what an awesome lie.

7. I'm somewhat lazy in my old fart retirement days
but it doesn't take much energy to find facts and bookmark them. I guess they just don't know how to do that.

4. that's just it
The truth is the enemy. To be battled against at all costs. Only trust RW talk radio, because that's what will ease the guilty conscience and enable the self-delusion. :sarcasm:

8. here's my story:
Since the '04 election I promised myself not to talk politics with my parents. Then my mom made an innocuous comment in an email, which I answered--fine so far--until my dad read it and went ballistic. This morning my mom called, is in tears and says that my dad is composing a blistering email to fire back at me.

The comment that caused all the stir: saying that it is good to know the issues candidates stand for before you vote, and stating as an example the fact that Repub gubernatorial candidate Rep. Mark Green is against stem cell research (which he absolutely is). That was the "lie" which I have been led to "believe" by the liberal media! Here are the facts, by the way:

THE FACTS ABOUT CONGRESSMAN GREEN AND STEM CELL RESEARCH:

* Congressman Green voted against HR 810, a bipartisan bill to provide federal funding for stem cell research.
* Congressman Green stood with President Bush when Bush vetoed HR 810. Green then voted to sustain the President’s veto.
* Congressman Green voted for or cosponsored legislation to ban or even criminalize stem cell research eight times.
* Congressman Green has backed efforts by Republicans in the state Legislature to ban stem cell research.
* Congressman Green, like George W. Bush, likens stem cell research to killing.
* Congressman Green’s so-called stem cell “plan” involves unproven, experimental science that has been panned by editorial boards around the state. The Wisconsin State Journal said “Don’t waste green on Green’s scheme,” and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel called it “Green’s near-empty proposal.”

That's the clip that made my dad lose it.

11. Sounds like Dad has a temper.
Is he against stem cell research, or just pro-Green? And facts don't matter to many of these supporters.
The blistering e-mail should be interesting. Will you respond or just let it go?
I'm very grateful my dad is a flaming lib; both brothers are not and I don't understand
how we could be so different. Sounds like you're in the same boat.

13. I got the email--
It wasn't as bad as I'd feared--maybe my mom got him to tone it down. He went on about how Green is against embryonic research and that it hasn't worked, and that the other kind using adult stem cells holds much greater potential (what?) And that it's taking a human life, etc. and "not with my tax dollars!"--you know the drill. The "liberal media" is lying by failing to tell the whole story, so we shouldn't believe anybody but certain RW outlets, I guess...

What hurts is being called stupid, gullible and unable to think for myself (and I'm 54!) just because I hold a differing view.

My answer to the tirade: "Okay."

6. I think you got off easy
maybe because it's a relative. There's one I run into once in a while at work. He's a driver so he spends most of his time in the van listening to talk radio, then comes into the lab and tries to regurgitate what he heard. If I try to give him the facts, his stock answer is "OH, you're a liberal asshole, what the hell do you know?" We haven't spoken for awhile.

working for you (to pay off the judgment) for the next few years. Show these fucking idiots what the down-side to the world they think they want is like. :dunce:

10. I'm running into the same thing today.
Seems the upcoming elections have spurned a flurry of political threads on normally non-political sites I frequent.
It's seriously like talking to a brick wall. Everything you say is 'liberal lies' or 'america bashing'.
They refuse to THINK about anything you say.
They seriously believe the Muslims are working hard to find a way to infiltrate the US and make all the women wear burkas.
They seriously believe Saddam ALMOST had a nuclear weapon and was going to use in on the US in the next few years if Bush didn't SAVE them from it.
They seriously believe that the 'Democrat' party is out to take all their money, kill the economy, force them into 'socialism'(most have no idea what that even means, but I digress...), and that Gore and Kerry would have totally RUINED the country (no I'm not kidding).
They believe the reason the economy was good during Clinton's 2 terms, is that Bush, Sr, set up the rules that allowed the economy to flourish under Clinton. And it's Clinton's fault it hasn't flourished under Bush 2.
Everything is Clinton's fault. He is a horrible person, his wife is horrible, he is amoral, and a blow job is worse than killing thousands in a war, because at least the war was 'justified' (yes they've said this too)

Honestly some days, this: :banghead: is less painful than trying to reason with these people. There IS no reasoning with them. They live in blissful and willful ignorance. And they like it that way and no one is going to wake them up.
It's like a goddamn cult.
Phew, it felt good to get that out today!

17. thank-you!
It really helps to run to DU and feel that I'm not alone. :pals:

It's stuff like this, the non-acceptance of reality and willingness to swallow lies and distortions, that makes me afraid for this country. The gullible have enabled the wicked to run the country. Thankfully it looks like their time is running out and only those who stubbornly refuse to face reality will be marginalized.

14. Very True!
My brother is a Fox News kool-aid drinker. Completely misinformed and misguided. Yet when he rants all I do now is remain completely silent. It's not my place as a sister, not my role in life to be his teacher. It would just be an arguement when I want to get a long. Family and politics often don't mix.

16. Waste of time.
Besides, I've watched diehard Republicans turn into Bush hating bots! Deep in the Heart of Texas! They all hate his guts now! I can't tell you how hard it is to believe how much these conservatives can't stand him or Perry or anyone currently called a Republican.

Then there is the other group, the ones that are  running around wetting themselves in public. All in a tizzy over Pelosi or Hillary they run around like chickens with their heads cut off. In public. I feel sorry for them, can't help it. They're the ones that own bomb shelters and keep it fully stocked!

19. They think you're crazy for wanting to live in peace with different kinds of people
I've said it before, a sane person has this as his hope for humanity. Freeper's hope that white people (or people just like them) will take over the globe and kill off all the "others".

No appeal to loss of foreign life, morality, the Constitution, checks and balances, none of it makes a damn bit of difference to a Freeper.

They think you're being dishonest when you act out of selflessness and cooperation. They think you're just trying to one up them. They have no idea why a person would go "against themselves" and give to someone who is different than them.

I was just playing around on a conservative board and I couldn't get them to agree that killing civilians in a war was wrong or bad. When a Freeper closes their eyes, they think everything around them disappears.

It's cooperatives vs. competitives. Empaths vs. sociopaths. Quality vs quantity. Reason vs. self-gratification.
