Press gaggle: "so 'dunk in the water' means what, we have a pool now at Guantanamo"

http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2006/10/20061027-1.html

<SNIP>

Q What could "dunk in the water" refer to if not water boarding?

MR. SNOW: I'm just telling you -- I'm telling you the Vice President's position. I will let you draw your own conclusions, because you clearly have. He says he wasn't talking --

Q I haven't drawn any conclusions. I'm asking for an explanation about what "dunk in the water" could mean.

MR. SNOW: How about a dunk in the water?

Q So, wait a minute, so "dunk in the water" means what, we have a pool now at Guantanamo, and they go swimming?

MR. SNOW: Are you doing stand up? (Laughter.)

Q I'm asking -- well, let's start with something basic. Dunk in the water refers to what? If it doesn't refer to water boarding, tell me what it could possibly refer to?

of times you can straighten a bent coathanger before it breaks. I get the feeling this admin is very near that point.

4. FOX Hosts: Waterboarding Not So Bad, Just a Washcloth on the Face
Honest. That is what they said.

Yesterday on FOX & Friends First, when Lauren Green tried to enlighten them about the true nature of waterboarding, her co-hosts disagreed. Brian Kilmeade said that waterboarding only involved putting a washcloth on the prisoner and Steve Doocy said "you don't dunk 'em in the water - you just kind of splash some water on 'em."

6. More like the following:
Take an absorbant cloth. Force it as far into a person's throat as possible. Put a hood over their head, and pour buckets of water onto them. The water soaks into the cloth crammed into the throat, and drowns the victim slowly.

Fuck you Faux. That's a li'l more than a "washcolth on the face", don't you think?

:grr:

10. And they finish up with a nice facial scrub and massage.
I wonder if they would like to volunteer to see what it's really like to be waterboarded? Apparently they don't have enough common sense to realize this procedure is considered torture for a good reason. F***ing idiots.

11. Wet washcloth is a known torture technique--see Godard's Le Petit Soldat
Edited on Fri Oct-27-06 04:08 PM by kenny blankenship
for a (simulated) example of its use. A terrycloth rag soaked in water strapped across your face will slowly asphyxiate you, if it's kept wet and if you can't move. First it's hard to breathe, your lungs labor more and more, lactic acid builds up in your diaphragmal muscle, making breathing progressively insufficient. You struggle violently and involuntarily, because you feel you're drowning. Then you suffocate, and then you die. All without the rest of your body actually needing to be immersed in water or even your head needing to be dunked under water.

15. If it is not "so bad", then why did we send a Japanese officer to prison...
for 15 years when he did the same thing to an American soldier being detained, during WWII?

17. No, I had it right
"Conversion by the sword" means, "You will join my religion of your own free will and live by its tenets, or I will run you through with a sword."

Perhaps this water boarding in Gitmo uses holy water and continues until the person being tortured... excuse me, the person being converted either confesses the Nicene Creed or goes stark raving bonkers?

19. Tony Snow in 'Dunking' Contest with Press
WASHINGTON At his White House press briefing today, Tony Snow fielded numerous questions on Vice President Cheney’s statement to a radio host earlier this week that seemed to suggest that giving terror suspects a “dunk” in the water to elicit information was a “no-brainer.” Many in the press have said this is a clear reference to waterboarding.

Snow said the vice president “did not mean that” and refused to go further than that, despite mounting skepticism from the press corps. Snow admitted, “I can understand why people would look at this and draw conclusions you have drawn.” But he added: “I think maybe it’s the end of the week and you guys are getting whipped into a frenzy.”

Finally, he promised to go to Cheney directly (not an aide) and get a direct response.

He said Cheney is not a guy who “slips up,” but a reporter wondered if, in fact, it was no slip up—that is, we do waterboard, and the vice president wanted to signal to voters that the Republicans are tougher than the Democrats.

22. Waterboarding video - not for the squeamish
See http://www.current.tv/pods/controversy/PD04399 for a great piece of journalism, wherein the host has himself subjected to waterboarding by professional interrogators.

It's hard enough to watch the edited footage. I don't think I want to see the full 25-minute uncut version.
