(on edit: forgive the surfing metaphors...they're meant to go with the cartoon)10.20.06 - A TSUNAMI OF E-VOTING CHAOS is fast approaching. We've drifted into the impact zone, so focused on the welling horizon, so certain we're going to ride the bomb full in for the prize and go home with the sponsor's hot swimsuit model, that we don't even realize how potentially fucked we are. And nothing could make the boys at BushCo happier. While many Democrats are bobbing about, floating on the tide of favorable poll numbers for our side, waiting to ride the perfect wave of voter discontent and desire for change, the efforts of the GOP to maintain their grip on power continue unabated. In fact, you can probably bet they're only intensifying.
We need to be ready. Because instead of a perfect barrel breaking straight down the line, this is going to be a sudden cloudbreak that comes out of nowhere and turns us upside down and holds us under and drags our faces across the reef. The dark forces whose slimy tentacles extend into and out of Karl Rove's lair know the numbers simply aren't there for them. Pulling off a credible "victory," if such a thing is possible, will involve far more than just flipping some 1s and 0s for Bush. They'll be relying a lot more on good old-fashioned voter disenfranchisement and their new ace in the hole, the courts. Because of the myriad problems which will inevitably occur as precincts from sea to shining sea experience their first digital touch-screen elections, races all over the map will be left hanging, with no remedy to challenge an outcome other than the courts. And we all know how well it all worked out the last time we got a court appointed leader. Other races will be left uncertified, or worse -- certified despite clear challenges, as happened with stunning extra-Constitutional ramifications in the
Busby-Bilbray contest in California.
