Not only is Iraq not winnable, it is lost

The Iraq war is over. It was over on the day the enemy allowed the tanks to roll into Baghdad. I know it's defeatist and horribly depressing, but we cannot continue to live in a fantasy world while 4 soldiers die every day. Wars don't last forever. Wars have winners and losers, and one side has won and one side has lost, and it's the other side that has won this war. It's sad but it's true.

If you look at the graph of American casualties over the last 3+ years, you see the simple reality that it is a straight line. A linear trend means exactly zero progress. At best one could conclude that the war is a stalemate. But that's just another way of stating a loss, as it means that the number of goals achieved is zero.

No amount of fixing can be done here. More troops won't do it. A change in strategy won't do it. There is no solution. We are talking about a guerrilla war against an enemy that will never, ever quit. They will fight for the next thousand years if they have to. They believe God is on their side. They do not fear death. But most of all, they have nothing to lose.

Right now the only thing left to do is to admit defeat.

:sarcasm: I agree with you. We should never have gone into Afghanistan much less Iraq. And we have lost both wars. Don't blame me, I voted for Gore and for Kerry. And I never thought attacking Afghanistan was a good idea.

Either way, the invasion and occupation of Iraq could never have ended in the sort of "victory" its cheering section hoped for and still insists is achievable.
