WTF?! Middle and High School Safety Drill With Police In Riot Gear?!
School Safety Drill Upsets Some Parents
U.S. Video

WYOMING, Mich. (AP) -- A school safety drill that included police officers in riot gear with weapons has caused concern among some parents who say it was too realistic and frightened some students. Police in the western Michigan community of Wyoming entered two classrooms at Lee Middle and High School on Thursday and announced there was a threat to the school, The Grand Rapids Press reported.

Students, who were unaware police were conducting a drill, were taken from the classroom into the halls, patted down by officers and asked what they had in their pockets, the newspaper said.

"Some of these kids were so scared, they just about wet their pants," said Marge Bradshaw, a parent with four children in Godfrey-Lee Schools. "I think it's pure wrong that the students and parents were not informed of this."

Officers wore protective gear, including vests and helmets, and carried rifles that were unloaded and marked with colored tape to indicate they were not live weapons, the newspaper said.

Diana Silva, a parent of an eighth-grade student, said the drill went too far. "My child was with his face to the wall in the hallway of the high school," Silva said. "I certainly don't want anything like this happening to my child."

1. Just training them for the New America they'll all be living in, as adults.

5. you are correct beezbud
If we get used to seeing this it will be easier to accept when the "totalitarian-tip-toe" progresses into a full sprint. They are only trying to lessen the "shock value".

9. And it will sure change the topic of conversation at dinner tables.
GOP scandals increase, so does the need for them to keep finding ways to scare the people and give them other things to talk about.

2. It is best to SLOWLY get the youngsters used to life in a police state
You can't try this shit on adults who know better.

7. I beg to differ, Adults are already adapting to the police state
Do you take your shoes off when you pass through airport screening? I have read memos where those in charge at DOT and DHS laugh at us for blindly following this command. There are pictures of barefoot passengers (in winter) pinned to bulletin boards in their breakrooms. Adults are already behaving as sheep, children and teens have a rebellious streak that must be put down in order to control them.

10. Good point
I was thinking more along the lines of "indoctrination," which actually would have to begin well before the rebellious middle school years. I guess they're just working their way DOWN the food chain.

4. We have begun eating our own.
Make the kids afraid. They will never forget this. There is something very wrong with this scenario.

6. I hope the parents speak out
most vociferously against this. If this happened to my kids I'd go at the local police and school board with no holds barred. Hopefully the parents get organized and go after all the parties involved. This must be stopped in it's early stages.

14. Yes
it is the parents that will have to take care of this. Let's hope there are a few that will take charge. Peace, Kim

8. I was a high school teacher for almost twenty years, and we
had a few safety drills and drug searches over those years, but the policemen were NOT dressed in riot gear.

What a frightening sight that must have been for most of those teens while they were at the school.

I can understand why the parents would be concerned.

11. We had a drill like this last year, BUT . . .
the community was informed well beforehand. The kids were volunteers. Parents volunteered to "storm the school" just like in a real event. We had a tabletop practice beforehand. Media was notified. This sounds like they missed a few steps . . .

13. To make this drill totally effective
it should have been carried out on the Senate floor. Now that would be worth watching! Madame Chairman bring me my brown pants!!!! We should hit the bullies where they live!
