1950: Earl Lloyd is the first African-American to play in National Basketball Association (NBA) game when he plays with the Washington Capitols.
1954: Algerian war of independence from France begins.
1956: France and Britain begin air offensive at Suez Canal in support of Israeli attack of Sinai peninsula.
1959: Former U.S. Marine from Fort Worth, Texas announces in Moscow that he will never return to the United States. His name: Lee Harvey Oswald.

1984: Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is shot to death by Sikh members of her own security guard while walking in the garden of her New Delhi home. Gandhi's son, Rajiv, was sworn in as Prime Minister.
