The report I heard was that the guy who got roughed up approached ALlen and starting asking why Allen "spit on his wife".

I've lived in Virginia my entire life and I can assure you that a great majority of the people in this state will conclude that if in fact that is what this guy did, they will have no problem with the way the Allen staff responded.

The people of Virginia have shown themselves willing to penalize candidates for over the top attacks, as was the case in the Kilgore-Kaine race where Kilgore shot himself in the foot by linking Kaine's opposition to the death penalty to Hitler. Allen's "book attack" has been backfiring for much the same reason. But there is nothing out there to back up the "charge" about Allen spitting on his wife and, as a result, a lot of fair minded Virginians are going to think that this was out of bounds. Hopefully, they will distinguish this idiot from Webb and not hold it against Webb. Webb should denounce this guy fast as he can.

How could anyone think it's OK to spit on your wife? Are you saying that a reporter shouldn't ask someone about the charges? I can't comprehend where the backlash would come from.

Most women won't vote for someone who treats their wife like garbage. Allen has been going after the women's vote by trying to portray Webb as sexist. This incident will bring the spitting charges to the voters' attention plus show what that Allen thinks it OK to attack a person who asks questions.
