Every democrat should have been as outraged as Kerry was and fighting back instead of telling him to 'shut his mouth'.

6. Might I extend the same kind invitation to you?
Bush is stuck with his association with the failed war every day in the news. He's been drowning in it.

Kerry has now given the RW reprobates an excuse to suggest that the last democratic nominee for president is disrespecting the troops or using them in punch lines for jokes.

That is not gonna sway me or you at the polls, and it won't sway the back wash.

THIS IS A FIGHT FOR THE UNDECIDED DOLTS, that 15% in the middle. This can make them uncomfortable about voting dem to show their displeasure with Bush and Iraq.

I respectfully insist upon the right to, as you put it, 'whine' about Kerry.

Kerry's speech defending himself and piling criticism on this admin and this war should sway them to be anti-war and pro-Dem. I think it's a win-win.

means:

a)they are clueless dolts

b)they don't pay attention to politics except 5 minutes of media every week.

In either case, Kerry was not helpful for the undecideds.

31. What was he thinking?
The timing and the message couldn't have been worse. It's Christmas on Halloween for Karl Rove. What was John Kerry thinking?

I'm loyal to my liberal/progressive ideals not to any particular politician. Today Kerry, to my horror, inexplicably damaged the possibility of taking back both houses from the crooks. How much damage we'll never know but a lot depends on how Kerry handles this going forward. So far it looks like he's more concerned with keeping his presidential ambitions alive. Nobody made him say what he said. His explanation is pathetic. If I don't buy it, and I voted for him in '04, I certainly don't expect the rest of America, 90% of whom are to the right of me to buy it. He needs to apologize to the troops imediately so we can put this debacle behind us and keep pressure on Bush and the squirming repugs. By not apologizing to the troops he puts the Repugs in the role of defending the troops for however long this lasts and Nov.7th is only a week away. This is a classic political screw up of the highest order by someone you'd think would know better.

38. Of course I'm concerned
I am very concerned about this election. Do you not know how many close races there are? Do you realize that the margin for winning many of these races is going to be within 1 or 2%? Do you understand that Rove would love for Kerry to continue raving about this and keep it in the top of the news until election day? Go ahead and continue contibuting to the discussions on this site by posting unmistakably veteran replies like "bullshit" when you disagree. I will not be cocky or complacent this time because I know what's at stake and I know what a fuck up is when I see it.

43. Why NOW? Why with easily misconstrued words?
Indeed, using the glib generalization of 'education' as to who goes in and who "succeeds"... Kerry's supposedly bright. Why is he being so sloppy with his linguistics?

And I quote: "You know education, if you make the most of it, you study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. And if you don't, you get stuck in Iraq," he said.

Come on, Kerry was trolling. It's as simple as that. After all, there are DUers with Masters degrees who haven't had a minute's worth of employment since having their jobs offshored. Education is not the issue. Kerry's disgusting, one-sided comment is. And may the Democratic Party not suffer because of that creep. (I haven't forgotten his performance in the 2004 debates and the quick concession of the election despite plenty of valid reasons to make a case for fraud. The Republicans would have if they had lost...)

Edited on Tue Oct-31-06 11:14 PM by me b zola
Kerry was educated @ Yale and volunteered to go smack dab into the middle of a deadly quagmire that bears a great deal of resemblance to Iraq! WTF! It's not as if Kerry was the one to go AWOL to avoid service in Vietnam! So was Kerry calling himself stupid and undereducated?

The fact that this must be pointed out to people on a progressive message board is disturbing.

36. I will not "take the rest of the day off."
This is, or was, the last time I looked, the DEMOCRATIC Underground. You remember DEMOCRACY, don't you? That ideal institution that does not fear opposing voices?

I trashed Kerry for making a stupid freshman mistake. I did it HERE, on the DEMOCRATIC Underground. I'm not doing Rove's bidding, nor am I quitting and sitting it out for the next 7 days. Nobody - NOBODY -that I have seen on this side of the argument suggests that we ought to just pack it in, but many of the pro-Kerry Club have done a Rovian twist on OUR words, and frankly, I'm not going to let you get away with it.

What I did say was that Kerry made a stupid mistake, that reminded me of his disastrous 2004 campaign when he just QUIT FIGHTING. I said it to other committed Democrats. As well as the few Greens, Socialists, et al. that hang around here. But like I said, this is the DEMOCRATIC Underground. So you may NOT twist my words, tell me to "shut the fuck up," etc. STFU??? You mean like Laura Ingraham saying, "Shut up and sing?" How "Democratic" of you.

You are dismissed.

So Kerry said something impolitic. Yes, the wingnuts and the MSM will go to town trying to make something out of it. Guess fucking what? Kerry is not running for anything right now.

Kerry can turn this lemon into lemonade by going in front of as many cameras as possible and clarifying his position and excorciating the Bush** failure agenda.

Bottom line, this is the kind of mistake I can forgive, and IMHO 99% of the folks who will get their panties in a wad over this were already going to vote Republican. Hell, he might even win some votes for us, for simply having the balls to make a tough point.

52. Does any criticism of Kerry earn one the moniker "trashers/whiners"???
I'm not sure who this thread is aimed at.

But anyone noting (1) that the joke Kerry intended to deliver was not very funny, or not worth making, or (2) that by botching the delivery he inadvertantly created a linguistic ambiguity which was cynically exploited by the Republicans, is simply stating the obvious.

Unfortunately, Kerry delivered a faux pas to the Republicans who can now make hay with it across the media spectrum just one week before the most critical election of our lifetime. If he can't tell funnier jokes, or at least deliver them correctly, perhaps the Democratic Party should just stick masking tape over Kerry's mouth near election time in the future.
