Fast forward to one week from today...
It's Monday, February 6th, Ronald Reagan's birthday. But it's also the day that Arlen Specter will open the hearings on the NSA spying. Those that are rejoicing today will be singing a different song next Monday, will be my prediction...The tide will turn....mark it down.

2. They'll still be kissing Bush's *ss.
If they were standing up for our point of view, we wouldn't be reading all over the internet that Bush is winning his argument on illegal domestic spying.

If it ends up as a big fight and lands in the SC's lap, do you think it will matter?

15. you don't know how Kennedy would vote
hell, even Ginsberg, Souder, Breyer and Stevens make mistakes some times, so I can't say for sure how they will vote.

It is a safe assumption that scalia, thomas, roberts and alito would vote to give bush a medal. But, there might still be 5 (I know Kennedy voted for the installation of bush in the first place, but so did O'Conner)

10. From your lips to God's ears- I hope so, but I fear he is going to
get a pass. The "majority" already have their talking points in place and are planning to just fix the law to accomadate the King.

17. That would be nice. Your reasoning?
I believe that there will be some angry words, some admonishment, some speeches, some testimony by witnesses only called by republicans, limited investigation, many many references to 9/11 and many thanks to the administration for protecting us from attacks since then....and many claims that the senate is conducting oversight in pursuing the issue. Yeah, it will get exposure in the media because the perception needs to be created that there are checks and balances and the senate needs a bump in approvals.

Result? Maybe some lower poll numbers for the administration (inconsequential), maybe a formal admonishment, a chance for some republicans to look like they are strong enough to stand up against the party line, and maybe some rule changes that we'll never know about to make this kind of surveillance legal.

There is no way there will be jail time, formal calls for independent investigations (except for irrelevant dem speeches), or a resolution to immediately halt illegal surveillance.

Please convince me otherwise! I will be pleasantly surprised if anything else happens.

12. Sorry, but not with Specter heading it up. He talks out of the side
of his mouth. Mark my words, with Alto on the court now, this spying issue will be viewed more positively. Specter will do nothing more than give Bush a scolding for not getting a subpoena first every time he initiated this type of surveillance.

14. Don't be sure, the repug majority will end up giving shrub more
avenues and reasons to spy more people in name of
security against terrorism. They will replay all those
tapes from Al Qaeda and shrub will be given anything he
wants.

23. I think we might be under the wrong impression about what
exactly the Judiciary Committee is going to be investigating. Check out this article from yesterday.

Oregon Senator Ron Wyden Demands Intelligence Committee Fully Investigate NSA Domestic Surveillance E-Mail a Friend

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), a member of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, today released the following statement regarding the delays in the Intelligence Committee's efforts to investigate the NSA domestic wiretapping program:

"The job of a congressional committee is to provide oversight, which is why it is vital that the Intelligence Committee investigate the NSA domestic surveillance program - it is our job. The committee has a responsibility to get the full story about this program and determine if the Administration in fact broke the law.

"While the investigation by the Judiciary Committee will examine the legal and constitutional issues about the program, the Intelligence Committee is the only committee that has the capability to find out, in detail, what actually happened.

"I share the concerns of millions of Americans about whether this program crosses the line between protecting our nation and spying indiscriminately on law-abiding Americans.
