1. all in all yes
The two big ones for the GLBT community are HRC and Lambda Legal.

Now, internally, they are as power mad and bickering as any other organization, and their leadership can be as arrogant with assumptions as any other organization's leadership.

As an example, they felt compelled to endorse Lieberman even though Lieberman had stated emphatically that he was against equal marriage and FOR state's rights (code for, "not in my state").

They had a choice to endorse the right candidate (not just the least worst) or to not endorse anyone at all, yet they tossed that leverage and made that statement and they even attempted to defend their position.

They did not withdraw their endorsement after he ran independent either, and so my partner and I only give money to Lambda Legal and DIFFA now until Joe Solmonese is gone or addresses the issue. He knows exactly who we are.

But to answer the question overall, they do good deeds and they are a real political power worth backing when you are ready to do so.

2. Thank You
A family member was asked on the street for money and he asked me about them. As I didn't know anything I felt sure somebody on DU would. The Lieberman thing would be a decider for me but I don't know if it will be for him.

3. I can't imagine them asking for money on the street, tho.
But they're well-established. I don't always agree with them - particularly lately (too DLC for me).

I'd rather give to Lambda Legal or a local group.
