Somewhere, Osama is smirking
http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/484523p-407912c.html

On Friday, word came that Hussein had been executed. The photos show he was hung with a nice new 1-1/4-inch hemp rope.

The new Iraqi government initially employed rope left over from the deposed regime, which was fine until a day they attempted to hang 27 people one after the other. The rope broke on the 13th convict, and the subject reportedly flopped around on the floor shouting, "Allah saved me!"

Which was essentially what Bin Laden must have felt when he escaped seemingly certain death or capture five years ago. Bin Laden remains at liberty, a once-cornered killer raised to mythic status by his escape and by our continuing inability to capture him. He is not just at large, but ever larger. The FBI even lists him as several inches taller than his actual height.

Bin Laden now seems certain to see another New Year, and where the World Trade Center once stood now there are twin towering outrages. One outrage is the stark fact that the man who murdered thousands of innocents there is still walking around, no doubt smiling.

3. Time America Grew Up
Whilst 9/11 was an obvious outrage it is time America grew up and accepted its part in the whole sorry mess which equals the modern world. Yes Bin Laden is still at large and Saddam was a brutal dictator but America must look seriously at its actions and responsibilities as well, and whilst these are vast in number here are but three;

a. Arab / Israeli Conflict - America needs to work toward a fair settlement and can never again be seen as sitting on the sidelines when Israeli Jets brutally kill innocent children as in the summer of 2006.

b. Iraq - America needs to find a solution to this problem ASAP. The Iraq invasion was illegal and the attacks on Muslims in their own homeland means that this will have far more reaching consequences than Vietnam. W's War is seen as a Christian crusade and the Muslim world cannot be expected to turn a blind eye forever.

c. World Opinion - America needs to fully understand that the rest of the world exists and that most of it is sick and tired of America going around 'playing the victim'. It is now nearly 2007 and America needs to move on and grow up. Why does America not command respect?, Why is the 'Rest of the World' unsympathetic? There needs to be far more soul searching. W's Iraq War is wrong and illegal but America needs to look at what caused 9/11, what causes the resentment in the first place.

Basically until the United States can seriously look at where it is in the world and take on its responsibilities the problems will continue. The U.S. should be a beacon to the adult world and not the adolescent.
