DUer Attempts to Halt New Year Lay-Offs
Edited on Mon Jan-01-07 11:24 AM by louis c
Happy New Year to all my DU friends.

As most of you know, I try to interject some organized labor attitudes to the worker friendly DU web-site.

I always have appreciated your kind words and support.

The members that I represent in Boston are facing a crisis created by the State Legislature. One guy (a Lieberman type) has shut us down by objecting to an extension of the existing law to keep us open until the Inauguration on Jan. 4. This could cost all of us about two weeks work.

Anyway, here's the latest update on my dilemma as reported on our local CBS affiliate.

I don't think you'll have trouble figuring out who louis c is.

1. That is messed up
Are you setting up a fund for donations to the workers?

5. We shouldn't be out that long

Maybe two weeks.

Because it's the first of the year, the full-time workers are able to either use their vacation time or sign-up for unemployment. The part-timers can still collect.

However, we'd all rather be working.

Remember, that one the most unionized industries in the private sector are involved in the Gaming Industry and New Year's Day is one of our busiest days, as well as time and half.

2. Good for you. but I'm not real clear what the issue is.
Is the shutdown because of anti-gambling statutes or broadcast rights for off-track betting? The article didn't give much information for someone not familiar with the situation.

That said, I'm conflicted here, because while I of course will (almost) always come down the side of the workers, I have a real issue with animals being exploited for sport like in dog racing.

4. Here's a link to a past article
Maybe this can explain it best.

Actually, I'm at my office at the track now, trying to prepare for another try at the state house tomorrow. I'll check in with you guys to explain to any who are interested.

Check this out.

I saw this just now, and thought I'd share it with you guys.

At the risk of being a braggart (I guess it's long past that time), here's my home-town web-site link.
