Gov. Bill Owens on Sunday surveyed by air blizzard-stricken southeastern Colorado as the National Guard rescued stranded motorists and provided supplies to hundreds hunkered down in shelters.

In an interview, the governor described an eerie blanket of white that covered areas from Las Animas to the Kansas border. He said whole highways weren't visible from the State Patrol aircraft in which he flew. Snowdrifts as high as 15 feet made even airports hard to detect, he said.

"It was like a totally different state, a totally different storm," Owens said after his flight.

I had a 6 ft drift in front of the garage that we tackled in stages. It was so big the neighbor kids were sledding on it. They got through the alley with a little Bobcat yesterday, so now we can actually try backing the car out.

OUr street in Denver never was plowed, and some cars never have even attempted to be moved... Fortunately my AWD Subie (once I spent the time to dig it out) floated over the big stuff and has done pretty well.

Our street here wasn't plowed either, but we had enough traffic that it's been beat down. Still really rutty and icy tho. If I can get out of the alley, I can make it to work tomorrow.

2. Here in Denver, I finally got out and about yesterday.

The city finally plowed our street. It made a huge difference. But still, driving is iffy in many spots.

Cabin fever in our household was indeed intense, alleviated somewhat by sledding at the park down the street.

6. Denver missed this last one

for which I am pleased. I heard about what happened east, and hope everyone is found safe.

DH and I have been snug in our apartment since Thursday. Tried to get groceries before the storm. The shelves were bare, not one loaf of bread to be found! I haven't seen it like that, since the Cuban Missile Crisis! (I was 8)

Makes you think, if anything should happen, how quickly supplies would dwindle. I guess the mormon's have a good idea. Stock up on canned goods and powered milk. Be prepared, anything could happen.

We made it safe to welcome in the New Year, we quietly kissed each other and hugged. I have to say, it was the best New Year we ever had together. :)

7. I talked with my friend who was able to get out . . .

he said the stores were pretty stocked up now, but last week they were bare. I wonder about Western KS, as I-70 has been closed for days. They surely can't get supplies out there.

Most everybody knows to stock up before blizzard season . . . but yeah, I'll bet those little grocery stores are picked clean.

I drove 50 hiway back to KC once in a middlin' blizzard. It was incredibly beautiful--but scary as hell out around Garden City.

If someone had been around, I'd have gladly paid that. The little Bobcat thing graciously got a big chunk of it, but I still had about 8 ft of driveway with a big packed drift in the middle of it. Ugh. My back still hurts today.

13. I hear you!

last week we dug our car out with a 2'x 2' piece of plywood! We had it in the trunk of the car. Then it took many tries to get the car out of the space, with neighbors helping by pushing.

People you normally see, nod too, and pass by. Were out helping others get out of their parking spaces. These situations brings out the good in people.

16. You couldn't find a shovel to buy in Denver, either after storm #1

I know because I broke the handle on mine and looked in at least 10 likely hardware, Home Depots, Targets and similar stores.... Finally bought the last mini shovel (designed to be a kid's toy, but amazingly sturdy) at Bed Bath and Beyond, figuring it would be handy to stick in the car at least...

but so few people realize we're a state and not part of Mexico that we've gone largely unnoticed.

To understand what that storm is doing here, think about having a 16-36 inch snowfall in Miami.

That's how prepared we are for this stuff.

Oh, and more snow is predicted through Thursday.

19. Here in the western suburbs, we got a total of about four feet

from the two storms

we had a couple of good days of melting and plowing in between though

I was really only "snowed in" for a couple of days though. The main roads have been really good all things considered, but most side streets are a real mess and some of the ruts are quite extreme.
