Great LTTE re: Book of Daniel's cancellation
Gayleen Smith (Letters, 1/24) is “insulted” by a television show, “The Book of Daniel,” and urges “negative reactions and threats of boycotts to NBC.”

Since I began watching television, there have been many, many TV shows that have insulted me. Fortunately, every TV I’ve ever had has been equipped with a mechanism to change channels, as well as one enabling it to be turned off completely. I find these features indispensable, as they allow me to avoid being insulted.

For example, if I turn the TV on and, say, Bill O’Reilly is insulting me and all other decent Americans, I can switch to another channel, or, even better, turn the TV off completely and go read a book, sing or do some housework.

2. Yay Andy!
He's right on with that. Why can't the fundies just not watch it? They have to prevent others from seeing it.

4. Great letter!
The Book of Daniel was a hit at my house, and I hate that small minds put pressure on NBC to cancel it. The information I pulled up on its cancellation said that the American Family Association mobilized its masses and threatened advertisers even before the show aired. http://www.mediaweek.com/mw/news/networktv/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1001918461

The show was NOT anti-Christian. It showed the human side of a minister and his screwed-up family---something most of us can relate to!

7. It was kinda like The Sopranos
in the sense that it was about a different aspect of being a minister. The Sopranos and BOD both focus on the personal lives of the main characaters, rather that just on their professions. And the message of both shows is that these people are just as human as the rest of us.

10. You're exactly right...
I love the Sopranos for that very reason (can't wait until the next season starts on March 12!). I guess that's why I liked Book of Daniel so much. I do hope another network picks it up. It definitely has a place, probably on cable.
