but the fact is that it would be an affront to all that Mrs. King stood for. Even with Phelps, the appropriate response would be non-violence.

I remember when I was with two of my youth groups kids at the United Church General Synod in Kansas City in 2001. One of the kids wasn't clear where she stood on issues concerning gays in the church, etc. Phelps and his crazies were there, right outside the convention center, spouting their hate. It was a real turning point for this young woman. She was completely shocked at the hateful signs and slogans. She got into an argument with one of the nutjobs, and I drageed her away, telling her they can't be beaten with logic, and she'd just end up frustrated.

Now, she is one of the strongest advocates for glbt rights that I know. She has educated herself about the issue and is active in the Gay/Straight Alliance on the campus of her college (she's in grad school, now). So, by being an asshole, Phelps created a great advocate for glbt rights.

Take that, Rev. Jerk-off!!

Here in Ann Arbor (MI). His "family" was here a few months ago to protest at the University of Michigan. Phelps may pull that shit off in the "burbs", but he'll get his ass kicked trying that bullshit in MLK's hometown of Atlanta. The widow of MLK is highly revered there....
