Jumpin' ship
Hmmm ... I almost wrote about this person I met up with several weeks ago but didn't. I figured no one would care to read about another one of "them" so to speak.

In our initial meeting this person said, "Those whiny Democrats want to raise taxes and stop the tax-cuts to the rich! What fools they are! Don't they realize that it is the rich that spend all the money in our country which therefore keeps the economy alive and vital?!!!"

I was outraged at that time and thought about the rich people I've known in my life and everyone of them has been much the same, very tight (as is this person in fact). So I dismissed this person's political views to go on and do the necessary business at hand.

Well, alas, I had to contact this person today re: the same business matter as before and being we have a couple of other things in common so we got to talking briefly.

I just said I was upset about the cuts to Medicare and this was going to affect US and OUR families (he is 60 now ... just wait).

This person came back at me to say, "Democrats will have to raise taxes ..."

I simply replied, "I'm not really into the politics of any of this at the moment, I just don't like hearing about these kinds of things. They are bad for us." And I left it at that.

Silence.

Quite the change there is noted I'd say, how about y'all here? I think someone might have just jumped ship.

One by one they go (and this person was the last one I ever thought would go too; a die hard).

I hope it is not to late but it takes what it takes sadly.

1. An intelligent response to that claim:
If the goal is to stimulate the economy:

Money given to the wealthy is often held or invested offshore.

Money given to the poor and middle class is spent immediately and locally.

If you wanted to stimulate an economy, which group would YOU choose?

3. I realized it was stupid to say that
I just let the person babble away. You can't change these types no matter what. They equate the Democrats with tax increases.

Now I think they are seeing a touch of reality perhaps. This person really toned it down A LOT. It was like a different person altogether. A changed mind, or one that is changing I believe.

So it means I believe that there is hope if someone like this is at least slowly changing. The process has begun is my point.

Is there such a thing as a half-way jumping of the ship?

6. It wasn't stupid, it was honest. I'm just suggesting another approach.
Most trickle-down supporters like to think they're using logic to support their view. Giving them an opposing (and more valid) logical model tends to completely confuse them.

9. I did not mean to imply that you are stupid
I knew it would be like starting up an argument with this person to say the very true things you suggest. I was not in the mood to get into it with this particular person given the job being done. We must interact with one another whether we like it or not at times. In fact, I actually like this person in an odd way.

11. Wow! We're really misunderstanding each other...
I thought that you were saying that you were stupid for not confronting him...

:)

Regardless, we seem to agree on the facts.

12. I just figure they are irrational to begin with
so why bother fighting with one of "them". I can't be bothered. I'd rather spend my time doing something to change things and help others. In any event, this person was really too much and I would have told them off it I had not had the business at hand to deal with. *sigh*

I apologize for any misunderstanding.

And as for you ... :toast: :D

10. that's the cycle the repugs are comfortable with-
the Democrats do the hard work of fixing/growing the economy back to health, then the pugs come in and reap the profits.

feudalism is alive and well.

13. "Democrats will have to raise taxes ..." ???
I would have needed to bite my tongue and sit on my hands. Otherwise I'd pop off a good "Republicans don't have the balls to do what's required" and flipped him off.

I guess I'm not real clear about his 'jumping ship', though. Was he saying Democrats need to be in charge of things and he'd support them? Or was he being snarky?

14. I think so - no choice but to support the Democrats
I think this is what this person was saying in a round about way.

I would have really said something, but the nature of my encounter with this person resulted in me saving almost $1,000. so I shut the hell up and put up with this person. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do.

I think once this person realized the Medicare/Medicaid scenario (and this person works via the AARP and is a disabled veteran relying on the VA for all medical care *eek*) it changed this person's mind. It took a lot yes, but just being he said the one statement, "Democrats will raise taxes" in a rather monotone voice rather than a screaming rant, I knew then that that this person was realizing that the tax breaks for the rich (perhaps him?) just could NOT continue; cornered I'd say this person is now.

The conversation yesterday when politics were brought up again by this person, NOT ME, I just said to avoid conflict, "I'm really not into the politics of this crap. As far as Republican v. Democrat, the way I feel is throw them all out and get a whole new batch of people it to run the country that are HONEST which I also said is nothing new with me as I've been saying this for years. After I said that, this person actually AGREED w/me! :)
