Letter from Pay Pal -- Should I trust it?

I just got an e-mail from Pay Pal -- or it says it's from Pay Pal. It has a link to click on, and looks official. I don't mind responding if it's real. But with all the viruses and worms and scams going around, I'm not sure if it's legit or not. Has anyone else gotten a letter like this? .

"Dear valued PayPal® member:

It has come to our attention that your PayPal® account information needs to be updated as part of our continuing commitment to protect your account and to reduce the instance of fraud on our website. If you could please take 5-10 minutes out of your online experience and update your personal records you will not run into any future problems with the online service.


However, failure to update your records will result in account suspension.


Once you have updated your account records, your PayPal® session will not be interrupted and will continue as normal."

Don't click the link. If you think it's valid, go to paypal and look for a number to call to talk to customer service first.

3. I wouldn't trust it

because I have gotten the same email on several email accounts I supervise for various web clients. What is interesting is that NONE of them have a Pay-Pal account. So be warned.

This is total spamola.

Here is a good way to check...copy the link and paste it into your address bar. DO NOT CLICK ON IT. Copy and paste it. If the address starts with a series of numbers or anything other than www.paypal.com, it is bogus. Approximately 99.9999999% of these are.

9. I got one of those and another a few days later saying that

my account had been compromised. I used Paypal once several years ago so I'm not a regular user. I didn't open either message and did not reply to either. I did leave them in my inbox. I never download to my home computer but always just check my e-mail on the ISP's website.

I, too, would welcome some feedback.

They would not greet you as "Valued PayPal Member" they would greet you by name.

11. NO!! Do not open. It is a phishing scam. Go to Paypals

website and find the info about it. It will tell you how to tell if it is true correspondence from them. I got the same thing and the reason I was suspicious was because it was my charter e-mail address and I used a yahoo e-mail when I signed up. Luckily I did not respond before checking it out. Then I saw a thing about it on TV.

my credit card info needed updating. Don't use any link on the page. If you have questions, go directly to your account and log-in.

14. Be very careful. I have gotten two emails today stating that someone

has tried to access my PayPal account. Then it asks me to click on the link - type in my password (as if!) yadda, yadda, yadda.

I have also received today emails from people answering questions about items I have no interested in purchasing. World Cup tickets and an engine block. Yeah, right. Not sure what to do now but I'm not answering any email I don't know is real.

As a frequent Paypal user, I get this scam notice all the time. They want your paypal password. Please stay away from it. If you alway "signed on," then immediately get out, go to the real Paypal site and change your password, ASAP.

I freaked when I recieved this email a while back and asked my neighbor about it. he gave me the link and I have used it on a couple occasions since then. Copy and paste it into a message to paypal. they'll get back to you and thank you for reporting it.

20. Scam. You can tell by mousing over the link...

BUT DON'T CLICK IT. You'll see that the actual hyperlink does not go to xxx.paypal.com, but somewhere else.

it's real. I do that when I get them since it might be able to help them track down who's sending it. What you got is a phising email...do not click or respond to it.

It is spam. Once you update your records somebody is going to have all the info they need for identity theft.

I have Outlook with a preview window. I didn't either open the e-mail seperately nor click on the link within the text.

However, is it possible that it contains some sort of little bug that could have been activated by viewing it in the Preview frame?

Dint click the link, but instead go directlt to the paypal site and log in. They even have a page up about that exact letter.

The same for questionable messages from eBay.

31. I received a similar one from E-Bay.....

I now have the spoof addresses for both E-Bay and Pay-pal in my address book...now whenever I receive one of these I just forward it to the proper place.
