Commenting on a Massachusetts lawsuit filed against Wal-Mart over its refusal to stock emergency contraception pills, nationally syndicated radio host Rush Limbaugh told listeners on February 2 that "the most dangerous place you can be is between a liberal woman and her morning-after pill," later repeating that "the last place you want to be is between a liberal who gets herself pregnant and a morning-after pill." After reading portions of a February 2 Associated Press article detailing the lawsuit, Limbaugh said, "I think these babes ought to first prove that they've had sex with a man," explaining, "I mean, that's in Boston." He added: "For crying out loud, let's make them prove that they've first had sex with a man, and then we'll talk about stocking the morning-after pill at Wal-Mart."

Let's face it. The guy was taking enought Oxycodone to bring down an elephant for the past several years. He's also not what you'd call warm and fuzzy when he's supposedly not stoned. The only way anyone can be loved endlessly, unconditionally and joyously is when the lover in question knows their loved one -- he or she is secure enough in the relationship to be emotionally available. I can't imagine the rejection that would result in involving myself with someone who's incapable of truthfulness, let alone any kind of openness with another person.

The consequences for a woman who is unable to prevent an unintended pregancy, depending on her health profile and many other individual factors can be dire, and CAN include death. The people who might refuse to fill an Rx for an ED drug may be warped by the same prejudices and ignorance that those attempting to deny emergency contraception also suffer with, but equating these scenarios minimizes the atrocity that the blatantly misogynist motives of pharmacists who feel justified in exposing a woman to the health crisis that is an unintended pregnancy. It's not acceptable to minimize the severity of that second problem. Also? It makes it easier for people to confuse the necessity that contraception is for women, especially emergency contraception, with the relative luxury Viagra is for men, and for ignorant assholes to continue to think that denying EC is the same thing as condoning sex, while happily forgetting the number of women who need it because they were raped.

This applies to all pharmacies within MA--meaning that if a woman comes in with a prescription, the pharmacy has a legal obligation to fill that prescription, and also to emergency rooms, where the hospital pharmacy must stock EC and provide it when it is asked for.

Um, you can't use an EC pill if you are already pregnant, so that was pure Limbaugh BS.

The only reason to use EC is if you have had unprotected sex (usually in cases of rape) and fear you might BECOME pregnant as a result of it. It's only effective for a few days, as far as I know, so he's a dingbat and a mysoginist.
