I Know My First Name Is Steven
Edited on Thu Jan-18-07 08:29 PM by CatWoman
The story about those two young boys who were kidnapped reminded me of the case of Steven Staynor, who was abducted at the age of 7 by a freak. See Steven's story below:

Based on a true story, the two-part TV movie I Know My First Name Is Steven tells the tragic story of Steven Staynor. At age 7, Steven was kidnapped by two men who held him captive in a tiny shed for seven years. One of the men, a habitual child abuser named Kenneth Parnell, sexually assaulted Steven on an almost daily basis during the boy's ordeal. At age 14, Steven finally was able to escape and return to his family. But we are shown that Steven's safe return was far from the happy ending it appeared to be. He's forced to adjust to a family he'd never really known, to convince himself that his parents had never forgotten him, and to put his seven-year Hell behind him. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide

Of course that freak molested those boys. The true story is coming out slowly but surely. Steven Staynor was so ashamed of what the freak Parnell did to him, he tried to hide the sordid details from his family and prosecutors. I hope and pray that these boys find the courage and strength to get the truth out there.

A tv movie was made depicting Steven's ghastly ordeal, and ended with his tragic death in the Spring of 1989. He was only 28 when he died, and left behind a widow and two young children.

RIP, Steven Staynor.

1. Steven Stayner was Cary Stayner's brother....
Some generally weird circumstances surrounding that family.

15. People had wanted to name a park after Stephen
but because of Cary the city decided against the name change.

14. Oh, Papa's living the life all right!
He's great - even had his Prozac dosage reduced! And he went to a fancy cat spa over the holidays while we were gone.

Let's just say I've stayed in worse motels:

He had daily massage, grooming and playtime. He came home very rested and relaxed. He LOVED it!

18. I saw Cary's story on American Justice --
I believe they said as a child, he blamed himself for his brother's abduction -- can't remember why, just something a kid would think, like that he should've protected him or something -- but that the whole situation really messed him up.... obviously....

2. I totally remembered that story.
I happned to flip by one of the talk shows this week and they had his widow on.

Sad tale indeed.

Let's hope the other boy has an easier time adjusting. Although I must admit to feeling very uncomfortable with all of the national interviews he's doing only a week later.

You know the ones from the Carol Lund Organization.

They were found in a trunk of a car in some state park.

17. The only good thing about the priest scandal
is that abused boys are finding it a little easier to come forward. Slowly but surely boys who have been abused that way are able to say it out loud. I dated one in college for a short time. He had major trust issues and major shame issues. Over the years he has gotten better thank goodness but still is single.

19. Parnell served only FIVE YEARS in prison for what he did to Steven
Let's see here - kidnapping and multiple rapes involving forced oral copulation and sodomy. FIVE YEARS!!! Gavel slams down, judge says "Okay, bring me the next case so I can go home early..."

I am enraged by this. The legal system failed Steven as far as I'm concerned. And it damaged the Stayner family beyond repair. His brother now sits on Death Row because of the murders he's committed since Steven's ordeal.
