Sheehan, Young arrests net apology from chief

WASHINGTON (AP) - Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan and the wife of a powerful GOP lawmaker are free women, with apologies from the Capitol Police chief for ejecting them from President George W. Bush’s State of the Union address because they wore T-shirts with war messages.

"The officers made a good faith but mistaken effort to enforce an old unwritten interpretation of the prohibitions about demonstrating in the Capitol," Capitol Police Chief Terrance Gainer said in a statement late yesterday.

"The policy and procedures were too vague," he said. "The failure to adequately prepare the officers is mine."

The extraordinary statement came a day after police removed Sheehan and Beverly Young, wife of Rep. Bill Young, R-Fla., from the visitors gallery Tuesday night. Sheehan was taken away in handcuffs before Bush’s arrival at the Capitol and charged with a misdemeanor, while Young left the gallery and therefore was not arrested, Gainer said.

2. Handcuffing Cindy Sheehan - what an atrocity.

The sons of bitches who would handcuff that lovely brave woman are nothing but brownshirts.

5. just like the Abramoff reporting
Using innuendo to link these incidents and make them seem "equal" while including just enough fact to cover themselves.

"are free women" - as if they both were at one point not free. That was the case for Cindy, but at no point was Beverly not free.

"while Young left the gallery and therefore was not arrested" - implying that Cindy could have avoided arrest if she had behaved like Beverly. Of course, they don't specify that Cindy was not given any opportunity to leave of her own volition or even zip up her jacket and stay.

Fair press. Yeah, right.

7. It says that both of them are free women now.
Cindy was the only one who was NOT free at some point. She was the only one who was arrested and lost her freedom. Beverly Young was just asked to leave. So it is a completed misstatement to say that they are BOTH free. I think Cindy should sue them for violating her rights. That government building belongs to all of us and she should have been able to wear it. After all, it is our house she was in.

9. Funny how their headline does not match their story or the facts.
