They CAN think for themselves. They have the ability to. However, thinking is difficult. It gets in the way of fun stuff like TV, boating at the lake, driving around in the SUV, etc. This is also why people hate. They are too lazy to find out about people outside of their "kind." Lack of knowledge breeds fear of the unknown, fear of the unknown breeds hatred for the unknown. As Americans get dumber and dumber, their hatefulness will simply grow and grow. There is an intellectual "perfect storm" right now: no critical thinking skills combined with propegandized "news," constant messages of virulent hatred of the unknown, and a sharp rise in politicized fundamentalist/evangelical religious fervor.

that very reason.. They do not like to think for themselves on any level.. They like to have all of their thinking done for them by people who "know better" than they do.. It is a win- win in their eyes because they don't have to think for themselves, and if something doesn't go according to plan they have someone to blame it on.. This was part of the reason I was such a freak in the conservative community that I grew up in.. I was a girl, and I wanted to think for myself, and I wanted to choose my own career, and where my own style of cloths.. Un-freaking heard of where I came from..

Sheep depend on a leader to lead, or to mislead them, and they just kind of follow along. Lots of sheep have paid the price for mistaking the Wolf for the Sheep Dog, because the didn't look closely enough.

I asked a repub, one day, about Bush lying us into a war and he said, "Some things are just better for us not to know about!" I though yeah, like the plane loads of coffins coming back to the East Coast every night. It pissed me off because the guy is not stupid, just too lazy to think, or care. The bad part is people like that, that don't care to know, voting to neutralize my vote and electing a scumbag like Bush, without even knowing, or caring, why his vote is causing me, or my family, suffering and hardship.

I have no difficulty following a John Kerry speech. As a matter of fact, I find it stimulating to listen to someone who can use compound/complex sentences to good effect. Most, unfortunately, having no interest in "politics," wish for prepackaged pablum, unthinking sound bite pronouncements that demand no real involvement--perfect for anti-intellectual republicans.

This is THE reason for the popularity of the Rush Limpbrains of the world.
