3. Is he calling out the right on thier greed--
or merely praying for those that he feels need to be prayed for?

Sorry to ask, for some reason my CSpan isn't coming through--darned cable.

7. He's talking up REAL religiosity
...and he's doing it in a way that gets into your heart.

"God is with the poor and the vulnerable. He is with you if you are with them."

Awesome.

9. Bono is saying what Fidel Castro has been saying for decades.
Bono is hailed for saying it. Fidel is excoriated for it.

Go figure.

10. Bono is pushing their scripture back at them
Fidel can't do that effectively. Bono is one of them (a Christian) and his words carry a lot of weight whether they want to admit it. If they believe, as they say, that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God, then they have to listen or they're exposed as hypocrites.

It's just beautiful.

13. When Bono can draw millions for this message (not a concert) like Fidel..
Edited on Sat Feb-04-06 11:28 AM by Mika
.. then I'll accept your theory. As it is now Mr Castro does draw millions at rallies wherever he goes just to express much of what Bono expressed. Justice, equality, poverty eradication, health care, low cost/free AIDS retro virals, education, etc.. Mr Castro quotes the bible and Jesus just as does Bono. Mr Castro went to Jesuit school and knows the bible inside and out. I've heard him speak, and he does so with more eloquence and a wider knowledge base than does Bono.

Once one gets over the US propaganda ingrained Pavlovian response to Fidel Castro, then one can hear what he has had to say on these themes of justice and equality.. and its just beautiful. Cubans have heard this message and their country is respected world wide for the good works that the Cuban people have done and continue to do in the aforementioned areas.

12. Bush is actually doing pretty well
He's being ecumenical, thank God/Allah/Buddha/Zoroaster. So now he's going to go back to the White House, end the war, double the budget for the poor and the sick, and follow Jesus' example in all things.

Or, he'll just get drunk, do a line, and watch the Three Stooges.

11. really good stuff
thanks for the heads up..
I was particularly impressed with his shout out to the military.. Using our might to help the poor would radically improve our reputation. I remember feeling that it was so RIGHT, seeing our military delivering emergency aid to the victims of the tsunami. THAT would be the very best kind of work that they can do in today's world.

Bono Speaks the Truth to Power
February 3rd, 2006 @ 12:44 pm

Yesterday I posted about Bono speaking at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington D.C. The purpose of his speech was to ask the U.S. to increase their aid to the poor.

Last night I thought to myself, that there was some sad irony in the timing of Bono’s speech, it occured the day after the House approved the Budget Bill which imposes “substantial changes on programs including Medicaid, welfare, child support and student lending.”

The Bush administration calls these programs “entitlements.” The single mother with 3 children who can’t find a job or can’t afford to pay for child care, if she does have a minimum wage job, calls these programs — sustenance. The high school graduate from a low income family, who has worked hard to maintain a high GPA, perhaps while working after school, calls student lending — opportunity for a better life. The elderly widow on disability, calls these programs — life’s blood.

A Man With A Mission: Bono Pushes U.S. to Increase Aid to Poor
February 2nd, 2006 @ 10:00 am

He bridges the partisan divide in his fight to increase aid to the poor and end world poverty. He’s a rock star with a conscience, a man with a mission and he’ll reach out to who ever he feels will join in his fight.

This morning Bono spoke at the National Prayer Breakfast and an audience that included “the president and first lady and leaders from Congress, the Cabinet, the military, the clergy and countries from around the world.”
