Your gasoline purchases at work
Edited on Sat Feb-04-06 10:46 AM by RC
AN ENGINEERING MASTER PIECE

During the construction phase......

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

All finished. Notice the palm trees outside..........

Remember, this is in the middle of the desert.... The very HOT desert where temperatures get up to 120 degrees.....

Unbelievable!

But true.....

The INSIDE view:

Why is gasoline $2.39 a gallon for regular unleaded?????? Supply and demand??? That must be it.... we want them to supply us with the oil and they demand that we pay the price!

3. Obscene!
They have enough money to go anyplace in the World to ski in the snow, and instead they've decided to bring the snow to the middle of the desert.

Meanwhile...people are starving and dying due to no medical care.

The human race has certainly become disgusting, hasn't it? Where are all the Christians??? I suppose they have nothing left over after rallying around their boy George.

How do you know they have enough money to go anyplace in the world? They can spend their money however they like. And what the fuck does this have to do with Christians?

12. Read the Bible. It might shed light on a clue or two... but you're right
Those folks are Muslim... The Bible has precious little to do with that religion.

5. This is nothing but
the rehashing of Freeper racism.

It's UAE's money. UAE can do whatever it wants with it.

Supply and demand: the price of crude has risen mostly because of growing energy consuming economies like China. Painting the Arabs as highway robbers doesn't help anything.

I can't. I note there is a woman in one of the photos before they start skiing, though.

10. United Arab Emirates isn't even in the top fifteen countries we
import oil from -- we import more oil from Norway than we do from United Arab Emirates. If you want to know where your gas dollars are going, check out Exxon-Mobil's most recent profit statement.

This is like blaming the Iowa farmer for the price of a box of corn flakes. This "Resent UAE" is part of the propaganda being catapulted at us.

14. I think our resentment should be...
Edited on Sat Feb-04-06 11:41 AM by davekriss
...focused more on the likes of Exxon, who at $36 billion in profit this last fiscal year have exceeded the Gross National Product of 103 nations of this earth. I think our resentment should be directed more toward George Bush, our Oil President, Dick Cheney, our Oil Vice President, Condelezza Rice, our Secretary of State who had an Exxon oil tanker named after her (quietly renamed after the Bush agenda started to unfold).

Bush's base, the Oil and Military industries, have done inordinately well under this administration compared to the rest of the economy. There are no accidents in politics. Everything has proceeded as planned. The skim that world chaos has accrued to the BFEE and friends is incredible. It represents a huge transfer of wealth from the public at large to a thin sliver of the favored oligarchy. Why else does the latter permit "free" elections? As long as our choices are limited to affirmed friendly fascists, then they're content to let us vote away -- afterall, they can always Diebold the vote count if things get out of hand.

The illusion of freedom in America will continue as long as it's profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way, and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theatre.

I'm also curious what the price of gas would be if we had a more favorable balance of trade, a more-balanced budget, and so on. As the dollar declines, all of our imports can only cost more. I saw a chart of oil prices in Euros vs. Dollars over time, and it was very illuminating. I also wonder what the price would be like if more folks were conserving energy in this country, but those are harder things to figure out than posting pictures of snow in the desert.

Red = Euros White = Dollars

15. What's the problem? Doesn't seem any more wasteful than any
other theme park. Or highways full of SUVs. Or subdivisions of 3500 sq ft and up houses...

19. "Or highways full of SUVs". Couldn't agree more
Some of the shit we see on our own TV stations is more wasteful than this. Some of the reality shows are one prime example.

20. They're going to make a fortune with this place
I went to the Ski Dubai website. The people who built this place (it's a tourism company, and Dubai is becoming one of the tourist hotspots of the Middle East; there may not be any oil money in this place) are asking $60/day peak and $56/day off-peak or $319 peak/$282 off-peak for a 10-day pass. Compare that to some of our finer ski resorts and it's not really all that bad. Breckenridge is getting $75 right now, Schweitzer is getting $49, Vail wants $81.

And consider: those American resorts don't have to pay the electric bill to keep the snow frozen--they make snow, like Ski Dubai does, but once it's on the mountain, it's there until spring. If Ski Dubai loses power for three days, they'll be pumping three feet of water out of the building.

This place also has uniqueness--not only is it the only place in the Middle East to ski, it's one of the few places in the world for people to ski between the melting of the snow pack in March and the recreation of it in November. So LOTS of rich people from Europe and the Americas are going to go there, which will help the local economy.

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach him to fish, he eats for life. But open a fish cannery, and the whole town eats for life. This is a fish cannery.
