Westboro Baptist Church to Protest Coretta Scott King Funeral (Feb. 7th)
White Anti-Gay Group to Protest King Funeral

Adding insult to injury, Westboro Baptist Church, led by anti-gay extremist Fred Phelps, is planning a protest at Coretta Scott King's funeral at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church on Tuesday, February 7 at 12 noon.

WBC said “for more than 10 years that by endorsing the homosexual agenda she was brining down the wrath of God upon herself, her family and the black civil rights movement. She is an ingrate-unthankful and unholy.”

Ironically King’s funeral will take place at mega church pastor Bishop Eddie Long’s New Birth Baptist Missionary Church. Long is an outspoken critic of gays and led a march to Dr. King’s grave denouncing gay rights in 2004 with King’s youngest daughter Bernice.

5. You know I was thinking the same damn thing...
I know Phelps little community (mostly his very large family) gives money to his "mission" but I just don't see he Phelps can as a major money maker...unless there are some severely stupid HR people out there.

8. The Phelps clan are mostly lawyers...
They sue anyone and everyone at the drop of a hat. That's the major reason for doing these publicity stunts - they want to provoke and draw people into action or violence so they can sue! Sue individuals, local communities....they like looking for deep pockets!

Groups plan presence at Frantz funeral

By Jackie Cummings
and Emilie Bauer

As Matthew Frantz is laid to rest today, about 50 motorcyclists from the Patriot Guard Riders organization are expected to travel from across the state to pay their final respects.

"We come to show honor and respect for a fallen hero," said Richard Wilbur, state captain of Patriot Guard Riders.

In addition to honoring the soldier, the Patriot Guard Riders also hope to shield the family from members of the Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, who plan to protest the funeral.

"Anyone grieving should not have to deal with harassment," said Wilbur.

"People in mourning deserve peace."

Over two hundred Patriot Riders had gathered at the funeral to honor Sgt. Evan Parker!

Before anyone arrived for the funeral service, we formed a blockade, three to four bikers deep, completely obscuring the protesters from view of the high school and the mourners. We held American flags high to block their signs and whenever they would begin their chanting, we would drown them out with our own chants of "USA" and the revving of our engines. They didn't stand a chance. After a couple of hours, they loaded into their van and were escorted out of town.

The family had asked that those of us, who could, attend the graveside service and join them for food at the Methodist church afterward. It seemed main street was the only paved road, so while the service was going on, Craig and I headed to main street to get away from the dust. We parked at the side of the road, found a shady piece of grass, and lay back and relaxed. I was amazed at how many people drove by, pulled over, and thanked us for coming. One older gentleman, a vet wearing a WWII ball cap, even got out of his car and tried to give me five dollars for dinner.

When the funeral service let out, we stood beside our bikes at attention as the hearse and family cars drove past. We mounted up and pulled away from the curb, joining the group of riders heading to the cemetery. The protesters did not show up at the interment and the service was as moving as was to be expected.

20. All the Rightwing Businesses
Edited on Sat Feb-04-06 03:47 PM by Anakin Skywalker
Ultra-capitalists love to fund religious groups because these groups provide a great distraction. The moronic populace gets all caught up in these false threats (gays, liberals, atheists, whatever!) that are advertised by the religious groups, while these corporations f*ck them over with the theft of their pensions, the outsourcing of American jobs, etc.

I am not necessarily saying that this pertains to Phelps group, but other rightwing groups that have gained more prominence and tee-vee time (like Brent Bozo's Censorship Coucil)

The history of all three Abrahamic religions is full of crap far worse than this Phelps guy. People like him are the rule rather than the exception, and the Bible is pretty explicit about its condemnation of homosexuality.

Of course, this I have an extremely low opinion of Judaism, Christianity and Islam, so Phelps seems normal to me. The world would have been a better place without all three religions.

13. Phelps and his congregation
Have got to be some of the sickest sons of bitches ever to pollute the United States. Hating gas seems to be their only function in life. I'll bet there are a lot of really repressed people in that group...really repressed. Some day, they're going to protest at the wrong funeral, and somebody is going to be very badly hurt.

Coretta Scott King was a beautiful, dignified, magnificent lady, who was a role model for millions of people in the world. It's a shame that this band of deranged haters are going to show their ugly faces at the event. They have no shame at all.

15. As one poster said at this blog, "Ol Fred may have bit off a bit
more than he can chew." Yes, that's right, it's not going to go over here in Atlanta where most people rever Coretta Scott King. I'm not sure where this church is located, but if it is in a black neighborhood, woe be unto Fred Phelps.

17. Bobby Seale doesn't! The New Black Panthers are trouble!
<snip>

The New Black Panther Party traces its roots to a small organization in Dallas founded in 1989 by Aaron Michaels, a radio talk show producer. There are now 30 chapters in the United States and Europe, Mr. Shabazz said. He declined to release membership statistics, saying only that active supporters numbered "in the low thousands."

The Southern Poverty Law Center lists the organization as an active hate group along with the Ku Klux Klan and various neo-Nazi movements. A report on the New Black Panther Party by the center includes statements by its leaders using phrases like "white devils" and "bloodsucking Jews." Several years ago, the Anti-Defamation League also identified the party as a hate group; a spokeswoman described its members as armed and dangerous.

19. Wow, Phelps would probably resurrect MLK if he could
just so he could get off on lynching him. This says a lot about his character, and it ain't pretty.

How sad that there is such hatred amongst "Christians."

26. Hope they get ignored.
Perhaps they should consider that their hateful words and deeds might not be appreciated by the attendees to the service. I hope they are ignored, or better yet, shuttled off to some inconspicuous location devoid of attention.

27. Perhaps we should ignore them as well.
Sometimes I think Phelps gets more publicity from all the left-wing sites expressing outrage than he could ever get on his own. W/o this publicity, he's just a sad, hateful man. The publicity allows him to reach more people & possibly even get more followers.

I was so appalled when I first heard about Phelps' "protests" & thought that he represented a real Christian movement against homosexuals. But then you realize that it's really just him & his crazy (or brainwashed) family. The only power they have is what we give them. Without the media coverage of his "protests," no one nationally would've taken much note of Phelps at all. He needs the outrage - he thrives on the outrage. A massive shrug & turning away the national spotlight would really help shut them down.
