If you don't like 'We can do better' what's a better slogan?
'We can do better' would be a lame slogan for an 8th grade class president campaign.

What's a better one to replace it that sounds tough and progressive?

Off the top of my head, I'd say

'Public servants not corporate criminals'

'Don't privatize and sell off our country'

or Al Gore's 'the people not the powerful'

or something.

We can do better here at DU--or at least I hope you can do better than the ones I came up with.

1. A slogan has to stay positive.
"clean government" instead of "end corruption", for example.

Try not to have "no" or "not" in it.

Yes, the only slogan worse than "we can do better" is "we can't do any worse"

12. you are wrong. the negative implies conflict and conflict gets attention
and shows that there's a problem that needs to be fixed--you convert a policy position into a story, and people like stories more than position papers.

It would be best to say 'clean government not corruption' or better yet, 'clean government not corrupt cronies.'

Dare to make it good guys and bad guys. You know the GOP will anyway.

44. Positive slogans imply intent to govern.
Edited on Sat Feb-04-06 08:37 PM by jeannicot
You don't have to spell out the conflict in your slogan. "Clean government" or better yet, "cleaner government" implies the other side is dirty, shows you are above petty partisanship (while beating the other side in the partisan fight) and tells a good uplifting story.

110. implies is not enough for those of average intelligence or below
Clinton made the appearance of bipartisanship and occasionally the reality work, but I think a lot of that was because he seemed unusually empathetic and sincere, so the impression slopped over onto good will toward what he said and did.

How do you think the Republicans got a lock on all three branches (besides cheating and having a bottomless pit of corporate money)?

Bush does this still and only uses 'bipartisanship' when it means agree with him.

8. Bring back FDR's 4 Freedoms
I often think in these dark days of Roosevelt saying that we should have freedom from fear.

Franklin D. Roosevelt's Address to Congress January 6, 1941

In the future days, which we seek to make secure, we look forward to a world founded upon four essential human freedoms.
***The first is freedom of speech and expression
***The second is freedom of every person to worship God in his own way
***The third is freedom from want
***The fourth is freedom from fear

16. wow--that would be a stark contrast with the Bushies 4 Fear Factors:

At some time or other, Republicans have said some version of the opposite of each:

***Watch what you say. If you disagree with us, you are helping the terrorists.

***America is a Judeo-Christian nation and our government should acknowledge that

***If you are hungry or cold or poor, you deserve it.

***If you are not afraid, you should be.

I can't see FDR invading an oil rich country over a lie. I like what you say about
Bush's Fear Factor, turning these principles around it's truly like a mirror
image. Also after the depression, he stressed that his presidency would be
A Return to Normalcy. I realize that this would have be updated into today's jargon,
but I think Americans want to move past 9-11, past Iraq and go on with their lives.

This is the cost of the last major wars, (I did not include the conversion into 1990s dollars, because I think it's not relevant.)
Billions
World War II (1941-1945) 288.00
Korea (1950-1953) 54.00

54.  The Six Freedoms of the Newer American Century
While I am not sure that FDR can be improved upon which just shows how universal and timeless this stance is - But, I believe it could be modernized and expanded upon with perhaps 2 additional freedoms -1) The freedom of equal rights to all. FDR did live before our era of civil rights and womans lib and openness and acceptance of different sexual preferences, etc. 2) the freedom conveyed by elections without doubt.

The Six Freedoms of the Newer American Century:

Freedom of Speech and Expression
Freedom of every person to worship or not worship the God of his choice
Freedom from Want
Freedom from Fear
Freedom of equal civil rights to all
Freedom granted by a free, fair, equitable and transparent vote

have done unto you. It has Christian roots, but should not be offensive to anyone.

When we tackle any problem, this is how we should do it. If MY kid was a drug addict, what would I want society to do? If I was an Iraqi, what would I want the US to do? and so on.

Democrats do this some, but the GOP doesn't do it at all.

This would be a way to seize the moral high ground and make the republicans look like the greedy soulless fart-knockers that they are

14. How about "WE TOLD YOU SO?"
“If we can say nothing else, at least we can say “I told you so!”

A plea for public gloating by Brian Hollister Davis, webmaster of godhatesrepublicans.org.

Like most people who never voted for President Bush, I have one particular part of his 2006 State of the Union address that bothered me the most. For me, it was the following section.

“In the coming year, I will continue to reach out and seek your good advice. Yet there is a difference between responsible criticism that aims for success and defeatism that refuses to acknowledge anything but failure. Hindsight alone is not wisdom. And second-guessing is not a strategy. With so much in the balance, those of us in public office have a duty to speak with candor.” (For the text of the complete speech so you can find your “most annoying section”, I suggest http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0601/31/se.01.html)

Why did this part bother me so much more than any other part? It’s the arrogance of the “Hindsight is not wisdom” crack at me and the millions of people who have ALWAYS said that invading Iraq was a stupid, obvious mistake. Like many millions of other people around the world, I wrote letters to newspapers, marched, called my Senators and Congressmen, everything I could think of to prevent this disaster.

Three years ago, Bush gave a typically inarticulate brush-off to those of us who thought his policies were, to be blunt, mind-bendingly stupid.

George W. Bush said on February 18, 2003, “First of all, you know, size of protests--it's like deciding, `Well, I'm going to decide policy based upon a focus group.' The role of a leader is to decide policy based upon, in this case, the security of the people.” To hear it in his own words, I suggest you go to http://www.npr.org/programs/atc/transcripts/2003/feb/030218.gonyea.html.

How dare anyone, least of all this idiot boy-King, accuse us of indulging in hindsight and second-guessing? We were against this idiocy from Day One! We were right; they were wrong. Case closed!

I don’t know if the damage to America’s standing in the world can be fixed at this point, but I doubt it. I also doubt that the damage done to America’s economy, the planet’s environment or even our national psyche by five years of Republican mismanagement can be fixed in our time.

We should try, but short of a second coming of Franklin Delano Roosevelt I’m not optimistic.

But when there’s nothing else that can be said, there is always one thing you can say that can restore a certain satisfaction to a horrible situation. That is, “WE TOLD YOU SO.”

Arise, fellow Progressives, Liberals, Greens and all the others who have been against the Insane-Republican, Neo-Conservative agenda since day one, and say with one voice, “WE TOLD YOU SO!!!”

In this spirit, I recently started http://www.WeToldYouSo.org to distribute bumper stickers proclaiming to the rest of the world “We Told You So.” I’ll also be displaying pictures of those who want to send me photos of their stickers on their cars, or anywhere they wish to put them.

We’ve all been against this rising tide of borderline-Fascism since the beginning, and we should be upfront about it. And at the very least, we’ll all feel a little better for proclaiming it.

Brian Hollister Davis is the webmaster and primary author of http://www.godhatesrepublicans.org.

Please feel free to forward this email to friends, family, blogs, mailing lists, newsgroups and media figures. Help spread the word that WE TOLD YOU SO!!!

used a deck of cards for the terrorists.

I like the idea of trying to incorporate that somehow into using them to show the Bush failures, each one in order of highest priority. Or the faces of those already indicted or involved in scandals. The theme could then be the The Republicans House Of Cards .

I've been thinking about this for awhile now. I think it could be catchy and memorable.

It would be fabulous to use in the Abramhoff scandal since that actually involves gambling and casinos, but it may be too good to limit it to just that.

We can't use any negative language in slogans--negative language immediately invokes fear. Fear is what drives people to accept having their freedoms taken away.

That's why the right loves negativity, because it encourages a culture of fear and drives people to accept extremes.

How about something to do with progress, prosperity, respect, transparency (but I wouldn't use this in an actual slogan because it could invoke a negative frame), and working toward a brighter future for the American people?

if you don't have that, which looks like negativity to some people, you bore the shit out of people, and way before they get bored, they will tune you out.

Part of what we need to do is define ourselves by what we are NOT and what the Bushies have done that we think is excessive.

With so many democrats coming from Hollywood and the arts, I can't believe that people fail to grasp this fundamental point.

Even when you tell stories about your personal life to your friends, do you just talk about the nice things that happen or the difficult? and which do people pay more attention to?

45. Of course, you are right, remember how well it has worked so far? >>>>
I don't like infighting, as I believe we all need to work together in order to effect change, but get real.

Novels are fiction for a reason.

Life is not fiction. Our countried problems are not fiction. What I said in my last post is true. The kind of pseudo-fascism we are inching toward under a RW administration is a direct result of the media and both parties cultivating a culture based on fear.

When you are afraid, you will latch onto anything that you believe will save you. The RW has made people believe that they are the saviors and that we aren't capable of protecting the American people.

Invoking fear through negativity will only reinforce this existing frame.

(I read novels from time to time, for a break, but you might think about reading some political science and history non-fiction so you can understand what I am saying.)

102. Exactly what I've been saying for the past 5 years...
...while staring aghast at the latest Bush depredations.

I've been saying variations on the theme of "Dear God we are SUPPOSED TO BE better than this!" in reference to torture and all the rest.

Somehow, "We can do better" sounds weaker than "We ARE better than this."

40. "A country worth fighting for."
Think about a speech that mixes this in, like this:

(part of Kaine speech, modified)
"Our federal government should serve the American people. But that mission is frustrated by this Administration’s poor choices and bad management. Families in the Gulf Coast see that, as they wait to rebuild their lives. Americans who lose their jobs see that, as they look to rebuild their careers. And our soldiers in Iraq see that, as they try to rebuild a nation.

As Americans, we do great things when we work together. Some of our leaders in Washington seem to have forgotten that.

Join our fight to make America a country worth fighting for.

In Virginia – and other states – we’re moving ahead by focusing on service, competent management and results. It’s all about bringing people together to find common sense solutions to our common problems. That’s how we in Virginia earned the ranking of America’s “Best Managed State.”

Join our fight to make America a country worth fighting for.

You know, no matter what political philosophy you hold, or what state you call home, you have a right to expect that your government can deliver results. When there’s a crime or fire, you expect that police and firefighters have the tools to respond. When there’s a natural disaster, you expect a well-managed response. When you send your children to school, you expect them to be prepared for success. And, you have a right to expect government to be fiscally responsible, pay the bills and live within its means."

"Bush is universal: he hasn't seen a single thing he couldn't fuck up"

Go right for the only remaining strong suit that the dictator Chimp still has in his political tricks bag. We need to highlight at every opportunity that Chimp and HIS PARTY has had 6 years to capture Bin Laden.

I also believe that directly attacking the mental health of Chimp would be useful if done consistently and forcefully. Actually put the Repukes in the untenable position of having to release a psychological evaluation of Chimp to prove otherwise.

It's time to kick some balls and feed these fascists their asses for lunch.

then

"On the clock" and show the candidate helping out during a disaster.

(on edit: maybe "on the level" and show the candidate looking honest or working in a bipartisan manner.)

I would like to see a campaign slogan similar to this statement because * and his admin are in the middle of taking it from us yet these are the words of so many great Americans that hold so much meaning for so many citizens who call this nation home. It literally hits home to all who feel disconnected from this government. We all want it and we want it protected for us. WE all expect our government to safe guard it for us thru our laws. It is a positive message that hits at the heart of what matters most to each of us, our homes, our families, our safety.

What do you think ???

The * administration is always pointing to their disasters and insisting that we "stay the course." A uniting theme for all DEM candidates should be "change the course." List all the bad things that have happened and will happen because of the "course" and then how a change in course would improve things.

Edited for spelling.

Change the Course. Simple. Straightforward. Imperative.
