15 year old peace activist checking in.
Edited on Sat Feb-04-06 09:26 PM by Ava
Hi everyone. I'm pretty new here and I thought I would introduce myself. My name is Ava and I'm a 15 year old student from Alabama. I began making animations back in early July 2005, and since then have made over 70. Here are 4 of my animations about the war in Iraq. I'd love to hear what you all think.

Why

Someone's

Bravery

2000

I'm also the creator of PeaceTakesCourage.com, but I guess the most important thing to you guys here at the Democratic Underground would be that I'm a Democrat. I'm glad to be here at DU and hope to get to know ya'll.

Your animations made me cry. I hope they can do the same for millions of Americans. Maybe in some way you can help stop this insane flow of blood, tears, and treasure.

I think you're going to be famous.

I always think it's wonderful for 15 year olds to be interested in politics. You must be very bright...especially since you chose this site. But watch out...it's addictive and don't let your school work slide. Get it all done before you post! OK I'm sorry for being a mother hen!

30. Ava, I just looked at each of your links and I am consumed by rage,
sorrow and tears. Thank you for what you are doing. I have an 18-year-old granddaughter and 11-and-8-year-old grandsons. My prayer for them and you is that you will all escape the horrors of the Bush administration's current and future evil and pointless wars. I will pray for each of you to that end. Keep focused and doing the great work you have started. I will bookmark your site.

Blessings, and be safe.

While I can't speak for everyone here let me say this. To me it's not the most important thing that you are a democrat. To me the most important thing is that a young, articulate, compassionate and intelligent person has joined in the quest for peace. I'm happy to meet you. I'll be sure to check out your animations. Thanks for introducing yourself to us.

37. Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
I don't know what else to say. Are you sure you're only fifteen? Wow.

All are very powerful, very moving messages. Republicans never want to talk about the horrors of war. It's always "patriotism" "heroes", and "America". The real story of war is always the horrors, the orphans, the widows and the widowers. Those that lose spouses, parents, and children. There is no good war. That's why it should always be a last resort.
Welcome to DU, Ava. I'm glad you're on my side. You do know that the Republicans will all hate you now, right?

43. Greetings from a neighbor in Mississippi
It's the Deep South, and you're in the minority. Sometimes it gets tough being one of the few voices that speak "out of tune" with the majority of the people around you. You may be laughed at; you may be ridiculed sometimes, and--unfortunately in my case--you may be subject to political violence, but know that you are not alone. I'm in college now, but I still remember what K-12 feels like.

110. Welcome aboard, Ava
Be prepared. It can get a little rough in DU land. On another message board I belong to, I observed so-called grown-ups attacking a 16-year-old member for his viewpoints. I hope that does not happen to you here.

I just watched the "Why" clip. The images are so powerful. Background music was perfect. Very nicely done. I'm not sure whether you are aware of this, but the "official" civilian death toll is about 30,000 Iraqi people, so, to be safe, your count is accurate. However, there was a study published in The Lancet last year (The Lancet is a British, peer-reviewed medical journal) that claimed that more than 100,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed since 2003. I heard a report on NPR about how that study was conducted. One man went door to door in several specific areas of Iraq (excluding Falujah, which may have put the count even higher, but it was too dangerous to go there at the time the surveys were conducted) and interviewed people, using very specific sets of questions about their losses and how the deaths were experienced. He then used scientifically approved statistical processes to extrapolate (which means to estimate a value or a quantity beyond the known range based on certain variables within the known range; for instance, let's say he personally interviewed 5,000 people and used verified demographics data to estimate the percentages of deaths for the entire population of Iraq based on what he knew about the 5,000 people) his findings to the entire population and came up with the figure of more than 100,000, with many of the death occurring as a result of U.S. air strikes. (Are you aware that, according to this report I heard on NPR, the U.S. has dropped more than 50,000 bombs on Iraq since 2003? I don't care how "careful" and "precise" they are. Innocent people are going to die. It's like dropping bombs in downtown Boston or Philadelphia and saying that they hit only military targets.)

Ava, I commend you for your efforts. The "Why" presentation is a vivid reminder of what "collateral damage" looks like. I hope you keep posting here and sharing your work and expanding your worldview. When I was 15, the issue of the day was the Equal Rights Amendment for women. It was defeated in 1979, when I was 16 years old, and today women still make about 75 cents to every man's dollar (for women of color, it's even lower--about 64 cents). Yet today, women are dying in combat, which was one of the big talking points of those who were against the ERA. I'm still fighting the good fight. Don't give up. Our future is at stake.

Peace,
AL

114. 100,000
thanks for the kind comments. i am aware of the study that said more than 100,000 iraqis could have died because of the war, but i decided to stick which the official numbers because although they are significantly less, i think 30,000 comfirmed civilian deaths speaks volumes. thanks again.

But since I was quoting a specific report, I felt it was only right for me to cite the source. Here's a link to the Worldview audio report from July 2005. I hope you listen to it, if, for nothing else, than to learn more from a different viewpoint.

http://www.chicagopublicradio.org/audio_library/wv_rajul05.asp

I stand corrected by two of my assertions. There were FIVE surveyors, not one. And the surveyors DID go to Fallujah. They wound up throwing out that data in the final analysis because it would have skewed the numbers too much, because of what was going on in that city at the time. They found in the other cities that about 1%-2% of their subjects had experienced loss, whereas in Fallujah it was more like 25%, which was what's known as an outlier that would skew the totals.

Keep up the good work, Ava! You are a shining example. My niece in Colorado is your age (she'll be 16 in April) and is also politically aware and active. You both give me great hope!

Peace,
AL

133. let's see,.....karma, artistic integrity, truth......
(e-mails and PMs). We'll probably never get what really happened, much less prove it. But something tells me something is not right here. And it's bugging the hell out of me. I feel bad for Ava but I hope this won't diminish her idealism.

I feel responsible for her discomfort over this issue because I introduced DU to her, and her to DU. She has a gift and all I can do is encourage her.

I however, am not a teenager. The idea that two people could independently arrive at the same inspiration, have the same vision, use the same music, photographic themes, and computer tools to simultaneously create almost identical animations is IMHO, bullshit.

But that is precisely what you are telling us happened. I'm sorry, I don't buy it, never will.

She is upset and was almost disconsolate that this could happen. She's proud of her work and knows her truth. She'll have to take comfort in that.

no, i didn't think so.

and please save the mello-drama 'we'll probably never know what happened' i already explained what happened, but obviously you have already made up your mind with no evidence just your gut and thats good enough for you to spread rumor & innuendo, eh?

136. Don't get defensive, bro....
I said I don't buy your explanation, that's all. It's not my gut talking, it's my experience and common sense about the creative process. The way you explained it is improbable, if not impossible.

And just because you "explained what happened" doesn't make it any less improbable. I stand by my statements. The two animations are so similar, I want to know HOW THAT HAPPENED. I'm curious as all get out!

Finally, don't "sir" me, I'm not that old yet. And if you ask me a question, don't answer it for me. I'll answer for myself.

I hate that this appreciation thread has turned somewhat snarky. But emotions should be expressed to clear the air.

i am sorry that you fail to see how it is possible for more than 1 person to use a new anti-war song with very public images from iraq.

i bet that in the uk there are a dozen more that we both don't know about.

look, i wish you all the best and hope everyone gets to see what we have put out there, because at the end of the day that is all i care about... pass'n the word.

131. Blessings to you, Ava. It's always inspiring to meet young people
taking a stand for Peace. It makes me hopeful for the future.

My own son is only a few years younger than you, btw. 12 yrs old, in six grade.

Let's hear it for today's YOUTH!!! :applause:

Welcome to DU! here, a root beer toast for you..... :toast:

Greetings, from California! :hi:
