1. I've been suggesting to the
"Gee whiz, what are they so upset about?" posters that they place a big sign insulting, say, Baptists up on their front lawns.

The lesson would be a harsh one, but it would be well taught.

4. The lesson I learned
You mean like the bumper stickers I had on my car that said "Born OK the first time" and "doing my part to piss off the religious right" and the button I had on my messenger bay saying "its your hell, you burn in it"? Or all the similar, and in many cases, much harsher stickers sold by darwinfish.com, evolvefish.com, American Atheists, internet infidels, and the local skeptic and secular humanists groups?

I didn't learn the lesson you seem to be salivating over.

So, why did nothing happen?

More importantly, why would you WANT something too? Expressing your free speech rights on your own property and you want xian fundies to retaliate? Some people considered pro kerry signs an insult to them before the election and stole those. Is that okay too?

Are you so in love with muslims you will wish any atrocity on those who would criticize them?

2. Muslims and Christians believe in the same God, more or less
If they did cartoons dissing Jesus, that would be something else- but they consider him a prophet, so it seems unlikely.

8. To bad most people don't know that.
If they did, the cartoonists might have thought twice before drawing up those cartoons.

10. Christians and Muslins do believe in the same God in theory, but
their belief systems on the attributes of God are vastly different.

Very different. Muslins do not believe in a personal God as Christians do.

3. They would sue for damages
not burn down embassies or riot :eyes:

Christian symbols and icons are regularly disrespected all the time in this country.

Piss Christ is just one of many that comes to mind. It's almost like a contest who can be the most outrageous

5. menstral blood
What "lesson" did the southpark guys learn from having a statue spray blood in the popes face? None. Catholics whined, and now the dvd set that features the episode is sure to sell very well, and more people will wait for reruns just to see what it was.

7. They already have
That TV show, The Book of Daniel. Ok, maybe not a cartoon but a treatment of the god issue anathema to the fundies. It's off the air. Would they burn down the networks? Probably not. But the smear campaigns would go into overdrive, and the devastation they leave behind will be . . . well, it will be what is left of this once great nation.

12. It's not Christianity
but the most vile cartooning comes out of Muslim countries, depicting Jews as devils, Rabbis killing Muslim babies and drinking their blood, and much, much more. Many of these cartoons come out of countries where the Government controls the press.

I am in no way endorsing the publishing of the Danish cartoons by pointing this out. Responsible media outlets should practice self-restraint. Publishing the cartoons, mild as they may seem to non-muslims, was an act of deliberate provocation aimed at Danish and European Muslims. It was, in a word, stupid.

11. With all the disrespect that gets posted about Religion here on DU
Edited on Sun Feb-05-06 10:20 AM by William769
With your thinking DU should have been burned to the ground shut down or taken off line permanently. Guess what hasn't happened & it's not going to happen.

So I guess we all know what that does to your theory.

13. DU is hardly like a national newspaper
Nor does DU have a history of suppression of any religious culture.
In fact i think there isn't "all" that much disrespect about religion on DU.

christ is in all hearts. when he was being stoned, and the mob was yelling and screaming in mob, he looked in their eyes and loved them. he knew what was in their heart. he knew why they feared, were angry, hate and he loved them anyway. jesus is in the heart of each and every person. he knows why they make the choices they do. he is not offended. he loves them anyway. if jesus is able to be in their heart and love, then i.... as a christian, hearing christ words can do the same. i dont need to protect jesus. i dont need to protect christ with more hate, fear, anger, violence. that is exactly what christ doesnt want. i am no longer on christs path when i then turn to hate, even in defending christ.

and if you are a christian god knows, lol lol,..... christ doesnt need to be defended he is perfectly capable of defending self

18. To my knowledge, the only violence that 'our' fundamentalists have
Edited on Sun Feb-05-06 11:47 AM by SillyGoose
engaged in is the bombing of abortion clinics and the shooting of doctors who perform abortions but those who did it were imprisoned for it. That's not quite what you were asking but its the only example I can think of that's occurred in recent history.

There have been some artistic depictions of the christian religion that was pretty offensive to them but they didn't riot in the streets and set fire to buildings. They organized boycotts and, in some cases, were able to apply enough pressure to have the offensive material pulled from its public platform.

All in all, I think the reaction we are seeing from the muslims who are engaging in this violence because of the cartoons hurts them much more than it helps them.

edit to clarify: Individual religious fanatics have resorted to violence but I'm referring to the organized violence directed at abortion clinics.

19. I'd love to find out
Put some Arab military bases around the country, let them bomb a town or house because "a person of interest" might be in there somewhere, round up a few Americans(white would best) to torture and send thousands of miles away, and let the Arabs write our new constitution. Then have them draw a picture of Jesus(you know, the pale white guy from the Middle East 2000 years ago).

Oh yeah, our leaders must be supported by the Arab government that put those bases here, because the Arabs love the cheap corn.

Then finally we(white people) would know how the natives felt in this country. And blacks. And Arabs across the world. And the people in the Phillipines. And the Vietnamese. South Americans.
