If you consider the middle east conflict as economic and not religious, it begins to assume some disturbing similarities to racial/economic conflict in the American south. In the wake of the Civil War, the Reconstruction left the south poverty striken, with a big axe to grind and with a defenseless scapegoated group---african Americans. The Yankees acted as colonialists, dispensing arbitrary justice when and how they saw fit. Sometimes they protected and lauded the freed slaves. Sometimes they bailed on them. Eventually, they bailed for good, leaving behind one hell of a mess. The Southern economic system which has relied upon slave labor, fertile soil and the high price of gold had bottomed out. In its place, a system of tenant farm landlords and bankers sprang up. They owned everything and everyone--black and white. Most people lived in poverty, in debt to the banker/landlord. The poor tolerated their lot on life because their masters played the race card. Poor whites were told "It is ok. You may be poor, but you are really one of the bosses, because you are white." Poor blacks were told "You will do what you are told, because you are black, and if you do not, your poor white neighbors and I will string you up." After a while, people forgot that there was any economics involved. They thought that they were playing a race game. Whites were doing God's will, keeping whites in power. Blacks thought that they were fighting against oppression that was purely racial in origin. Meanwhile, the banker/landlords were laughing all the way to the bank.
Fast forward to the mid twentieth century. Colonialists had their fingers in the middle east, but they were about ready to bail. The arabs, whom the British colonialists sort of admired, were left behind to do their own thing. Meanwhile, the Jews displaced by the Houlocaust needed a home. And then, a big fat cold war started and lots of manufacturing came along with it, and suddenly everyone needed lots of lots of oil. The colonialists started looking back over their shoulders at all that oil they left behind. Problem was that USSR was right over the border. No way to get to those fields while Russia was there. Oh, well. Never too early to start planning, and the American south provided a perfect model for the way you manipulate a people into ignoring their best economic interest.
Way back in the 1970's the neo Neo-cons, Wolfowitz, Feist, Perle, Weiss---all working under Scoop Jackson--started dreaming of getting their hands on Iraq and Iran and Saudi Arabia once the bear was no longer there. Of course, that meant getting rid of a lot of pesky muslims who called those countries home and that oil their own. No problem. Israel was there, and the muslims and the jews were mad as hell at each other. Should not take too much to make them even madder at each other and keep them mad at each other. Better yet, make the muslims mad at each other. Start stirring up sectarian violence. First order of business, get rid of secular leaders and replace them with religious leaders. That's been done already. Hell, the Neo-cons armed the religious extremists in Iran during the 1980s and they toppled Sadaam and installed a religious government in Iraq just reecently. Then, start breeding religious fundamentalist terrorists. Done. We even gave them their own training ground in Iraq. Make sure that religious hard liners run Israel. Done. When they get less hard line, have Pat Robertson say that God will kill them if they back off. Get religious extremists in the US to back Israel. Done. Identify anyone from any middle eastern state as a muslim first andf by their nationality second. Done. Make the American people equate islam with jihad. Done. Strip muslims of their civil liberties and convince Americans that this is OK, because they are all terrorists. Done. Get Europe involved. They are trying on that on---bombings in London, fires in France, nasty cartoons in Denmark and a whole population of muslims who are disaffected and discriminated against by their European hosts. Getting Europe involved is important, because Europe is the only place with a proven track record when it comes to genocide. America is likely to wimp out and say "We aren't going to exterminate a bunch of people just because they are muslim. We are the land of religious freedom. Get our troops back home NOW!"
There were signs of what was happening back in the Clinton administration. Recall the way that Republicans mocked Bill Clinton when he tried to negotiate peace during his last year? Said he was doing it for his legacy? Peace would have slowed down the Neo-con scheme.
Bottom line is Osama Bin Laden is a Neo-con patsy (wonder if he knows it and if that was why he offered a truce in Iraq? The truth must be painful.) Israel is currently acting the role of Neo-con patsy and could easily become a martyr in the cause of Neo-con greed. Iraq is 100% a victim. Iran knows what is going on and doesn't want to be a victim. Same with Saudi Arabia which is hoping it can actually make a profit through the Neo-con shenanigans by buying the soul of the president's father.
Osama Bin Laden is at Malcolm X moment in his life. He can go on being what the White Man wants him to be---the model of everything that the White Man wants other white men to fear. Or, he can do what Brother Malcolm did and continue his personal evolution. He may get assassinated, just like Brother Malcolm, but it will be the right thing to do.
