ABC Goes to Tape Delay for Stones Show
Two sexually explicit lyrics were excised from the rock legends' performance Sunday. The only song to avoid the editor was "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," a 41-year-old song about sexual frustration.

In "Start Me Up," ABC's editors silenced one word, a reference to a woman's sexual sway over a dead man. The lyrics for "Rough Justice" included a synonym for rooster that the network also deemed worth cutting out

1. I wondered if they cut it or he didn't say it
Shades of Ed Sullivan.

2. Personally, that was the most boring half-time I've ever watched.
Edited on Sun Feb-05-06 10:35 PM by FVZA_Colonel
At one point a guy I was watching the game with just draped his towel over the TV in his dorm room so that, while we would be able to listen to the songs, we wouldn't have to look at the zombies on stage.

15. Did she sing something other
then part of the Star Spangled Banner. That has to be one of the worst renditions I've ever heard. It sounded like cats copulating. She has a great voice, but tonight's performance was horrid IMHO.

24. Seriously, they are actually conveying their version of passion.
I was being a bit of a jerk running them down like that. Just trying to be funny...

25. Hell I think you are right.
Why do people insist on running up and down every note on the scale during this song? Blackboards and fingernails.

Why the hell didn't they tap into the Motown Sound since they were, um, in Detroit? Hell, I would have preferred Eminem - get some local talent to perform!

4. It was the only part of the game I watched - thought the Stones were great
really, I was ready to just politely not along as they played, but they effin' rocked.

imho

8. I'm in my 40's and ached watching Mick the 62 year old geezer strut
They did rock, although they need the money like a freakin hole in the head. Mick has to be worth a cool billion by now. And shame on the NFL for not making any of the MoTown greats a part of the halftime show instead.

people say the Stones look. The show did nothing for me.

19. So a bunch of old Motown people would have been acceptable?
Are rockers "old geezers" and Motown people who are 70+ just legends?

33. Good Catch johnnie!
And no answer provided. Apparently it's cool if BB King or Smokey Robinson are still performing when they're 70, but not cool if a rock band is playing at 60. Go figure!

23. They don't get paid for performing at the Super Bowl
They only receive transportation and other costs.

USAToday did a piece Friday on it. The Super Bowl is considered to be the best event to showplace an act as it is seen worldwide.

12. Agreed. They're old, but Mick can out-perform todays rockers
by a long shot. That includes R.E.M., U2, and many others. The Stones still rule.

6. So ABC bleeped Mick I thought he almost had a wardrob malfunction there.
Jagger's low low low cut jeans were slowly creeping down his bony old ass. I thought we might see something that would give many of us nightmares for years to come.

The man can still move, you have to hand him that and Keith looked almost healthy.

the sound board guy was terrible and it sounded like they never did a sound check at all.

22. I thought the same thing.
I'm sure they did a sound check, just not with 80000 some fans in the stadium. I agree though. The audio going to the video (as opposed to the stadium) should have been set in rehearsal. Something went terribly wrong or it was incompetence.

14. On another Sunday night almost 40 years ago, Ed Sullivan censored
The Stones when they appeared on his variety show. They weren't allowed to sing "Let's spend the night together . . . " Sullivan made them change the words to "Let's spends some time together . . . "

17. They were "ok". But then again better than the usual crap.
It was rather dull and staged with the minions of thumblite morons "moshing" in the teenie-bopper area.

But they all looked as healthy as as expected with the rich folk healthcare that preserves their appearances.

18. Too bad the mix sucked big time...
For most of Start Me Up the only thing coming through was Mick's mic. Took them forever to get a decent mix. Really not the best venue for their show though.

The Stones? For 60++ yr old men they did their best. Someone at the SB party said, damn they could have played at the FIRST Super Bowl. Then someone else said "Yeah and they could have played this song!" (Satisfaction).

20. Jagger gets credit for expending some energy...
he didn't just "phone it in." However, I could see during the close-ups that he was out-of-breath. My teen-age son did say, "He's 60? Wow, he's in pretty good shape."

Being a native Michigander, I was perturbed that they didn't feature local talent for the half-time show. What about the people that created the Motown sound? How about Eminem? Or really go out on a limb and have the White Stripes! Save the Stones for some town that has no musical heritage of note.

26. energy, yes . . . but singing? . . .
"Start Me Up" was okay because it's a hard song to mess up . . . the second song was also passable . . . but Jagger butchered "Satisfaction" . . . just doesn't have the chops anymore . . .

27. I guess I've always thought that Jagger was about energy...
and movement, rather than singing....I don't expect much from his vocals. Aside from the lousy audio, did he really sound considerably worse than 20 years ago? (Serious question. I don't pay much attention to The Stones.)

He doesn't sound like he did in 1965, but he shouldn't...he's over 60!

28. Eh, the best part of the whole show for me was
the commercial for "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." I was actually in bed reading, and when I heard the little girl singing in the beginning of the commercial, I smiled before I looked up. I knew EXACTLY what it was going to be. My kids started yelling from downstairs, "MOM MOM, look at the TV!!"

Capt. Jack Sparrow is the one who REALLY rocks. ;)

That completes the circle I guess, since Johnny Depp used observations of Keith Richards to help him "characterize" Jack Sparrow.

30. Like it could have been worse than the GoDaddy commercials?
The GoDaddy commericals have been the most offensive commercials I've seen in some time -- it's not like ABC didn't have a track record on them. But all in all, it was the most boring SB I've seen in many, many years.

32. NPR was funny this morning
At the end of their story on this the announcer said something to the effect of:

The rest of the commercial **** (bleeped out) was shown as usual.

haha, it almost had my coffee come out of my nose.
