45. You mean BEHIND the riots...yeah I've got that suspicion as well
but the participants are indeed muslims. Not doctors, lawyers, engineers, and businessmen, but dirt poor and ignorant Muslims who most likely do not come from the upper tiers of their cultures. This is socio economic.

It has nothing to do with anything as it doesn't even contain a choice for the likely majority.

5. What cartoons led to US bombing, torture, occupation in the Middle East?
The bombing of Al Jeezera in Afgahnistan? (The Al-Jazeera bureau in Afghanistan was bombed by U.S. warplanes in 2001.) The planned bombing in Qatar, a country friendly to the Bush regime? I hardly hear Dems in Congress complain about this either, with a few good exceptions.
So why don't we try and get our own house in order.

8. I've seen plenty
cartoons and satire about Jesus..think South Park... this week's Rolling Stone with Kanye West as Christ. I am sure I have seen cartoons that show the Pope as a Nazi and there have been plenty about pedophile priests.

The way we handle it is to bitch, moan, write letters, threaten boycotts and generally get pissy. But I haven't seen any roving bands of Baptists out there on Embassy Row.

12. There is a satirical magazine called Viz in the UK

and they published an entire comic strip entitled "Father McFiddly-- he Loves Diddling Kiddies" about the wacky antics of a priest trying to peek up the altar-boys' cassocks, etc.

I am a Christian but thought it was hilarious.

I think a couple of readers might have canceled their subscriptions. I don't think any embassies were burned down, though.

10. Not great

Probably some letters of complaint would be written to the editor of the publication. Some subscriptions might be canceled.

But I don't think you would see riots on the street and embassies being burned down.

Censorship is action by the government, not action taken voluntarily by a private person or group.

13. the christian majority is used to feeling persecuted
and its not specifically prohibited to depict christ in idol form.

in fact, its pretty much integral to the faith.

not that i care one way or the other. if your faith is threatened by a fucking cartoon in a newspaper in a decadent secular country your 'moral' ass will never visit, then you aren't very faithful, are you?

15. A boycott would undoubtedly be instituted by some groups
But there wouldn't be rioting in the streets or burning of newspaper buildings.

But definitely any paper publishing such a cartoon would face a massive boycott by the southern baptists and probably by that one catholic league that is always boycotting somebody who has offended them.

18. It wouldn't result in riots and embassy burnings.
It WOULD result in lots of indignation, and calls for investigations, and preachers wailing like stuck pigs.

Muslims can get their panties in a bunch all they want, but beyond bitching about it, they have no right to expect anyone to share their indignation. When they stop having disgusting cartoons about Jews on a daily basis, I'll be concerned about their cartoon sensibilities.

23. No, it wouldn't happen.
Fundies kill Muslims through their agent, Bush, and do it under the guise of "war." Their killing is more removed, with the exception of the occasional nut job who kills someone at an abortion clinic.

33. Try sticking to the topic given.
It's really fairly simple.

Would Christians riot, burn embassies, and generally declare a fatwah against Muslims if such a cartoon were made? Of course not. It's a friggin' cartoon.

When it comes to overreacting to criticism of one's religion, no one holds a candle to Islam. Not even fundies.

38. Clearly, you deny the truth of the history of Mohammed.
I don't pull punches on the Fundies and their imaginary friends or holy figures, and I'm not going to do so for YOUR imaginary friends or holy figures.

Mohammed was a scoundrel, a warrior, a murdering pedophile.

And I don't care who takes umbrage.

You can take him, the Nazi Pope, and Jerry Falwell and stick them all in the same group as far as I'm concerned. They're all charlatans who use ignorance and superstitions to lead weak minds.

42. Yes, but the premise is flawed.
You do agree that Mohammed took preteens as wives, do you not?

And you do agree that Jesus didn't, do you not?

The point is that there is truth to the allegation that Mohammed had sex with young girls, just as there is truth that many early Mormons did so.

As for fundies who do so, I wouldn't know, but I'm sure there are some who do, but we're not talking about them, we're talking about Mohammed and Jesus, two men who could not have been more different.

"How do you think the people would react if say France printed a cartoon depicting Jesus as an abortion clinic bomber?"

Of course they always say "well we wouldn't riot!"

I can tell ya though. it would get Pat Robertson to issue a fatwa or two, and you know Bill O'Reilly would re-energsie his ban on everything french...

32. The Last Temptation of Christ
Scorsese's "The Last Temptation of Christ" certainly inspired violence, in France at least. From an article about the kerfuffle created by the more recent, "The Passion of the Christ".

The industry is acutely aware of the capacity of film to stir popular passions after its experience of violent demonstrations and attacks on French cinemas following the release of Martin Scorsese's Last Temptation of Christ in 1988.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2004/02/29/wpass29.xml

Focusing on cartoons and wondering whether Christians would be bothered by unflattering depictions of Jesus or whomever is unhelpful. There is a rich history of extremists from all walks of life who turn to violence when they perceive a insult. The nature of the insult they perceive is immaterial.
