How close do you feel the United States is to an ideologically based war?

Here is my belief:

Sometime around July or August, SOMETHING will happen, especially if the GOP looks like it will get thumped hard on 11/7. Since Dr. Gap has been wondering how to postpone the elections (remember they said that in 2004), this event will tip the Neo-cons hands. President Smirking Chimp will declare the country unsafe for elections. This will be challenged and the SCOTUS will take it. Let's look at how it will do down: (FOR means for postponement, CON = against)

ROBERTS - FOR
SCALIA - FOR
THOMAS - FOR
ALITO - FOR
STEVENS - AGAINST
SOUTER - AGAINST
GINSBURG - AGAINST
BREYER - AGAINST

That leaves Kennedy, who voted for Bush in Bush V. Gore.

So, I see a 5 - 4 to postpone. The elections will be postponed indefinately.

I know, I'm just an alarmist. . .but I haven't been wrong yet!

My question is. . .what will Americans do if this happens?
I have NO faith in the American people anymore! Not since 2000.

I see 7-2 against (even in the worst case, say, 1 commando raid a week on shopping malls). ScaliaThomas, of course, but the rest . . . nah. While I'm no lawyer, I don't think you could get nationwide martial law for anything short of an invasion by divisions of troops (or bird flu pandemic).

Whoops! What if the "something" you allude to is bird flu? Then they'd close down the elections as a public health issue.

Now you've got me worried.

8. What difference does it make - if they control the counting of the votes..

...or can manipulate the counting of the votes then they don't need to go to that extreme.
