Google Wants To Build Its Own Internet...
Concerns that cable and phone companies want to charge Google and other new media companies for use of their networks are fueling continued speculation that the search giant is looking to build its own Internet.

A report in The Times of London this past Friday cites unnamed sources who claim Google is developing a network of its own that would allow the company to bypass the existing Internet.

Under the plan, people would be able to connect to the Google-owned network with a cheap PC that retails for less than $100, the paper reported.

GOOGLE'S WEB OF SPECULATION

By HOLLY M. SANDERS

February 6, 2006 -- Concerns that cable and phone companies want to charge Google and other new media companies for use of their networks are fueling continued speculation that the search giant is looking to build its own Internet.

A report in The Times of London this past Friday cites unnamed sources who claim Google is developing a network of its own that would allow the company to bypass the existing Internet.

Under the plan, people would be able to connect to the Google-owned network with a cheap PC that retails for less than $100, the paper reported.

Rumors that Google is setting up a global network have been around since 2000 when it began buying up miles of previously unused fiber-optic cables and building myriad server farms in New York City and elsewhere.

6. I was thinking that too. Of course it might still wind up being a pay deal
and this is just a way for Google to get a bigger share?

Dunno

9. Maybe so.
But at least Google has shown, that, up until this point it will not play nice with a rogue law breaking government that wants to spy on Americans. We pay for the internet now. It would be just a matter of who gets my money. And if I had to choose, I would pick Google.

10. Google is the one keeping your personal preferences
The government, despite the hype, only wanted anonymous search query vs results.

7. O.K
Competition is a good thing. Telecom and the Government want to restrict Internet usage to only those who pay for a subscriber service.

Let Google have it's own network.

8. Ther US Government ought to charge the damn phone and cable companies
Edited on Mon Feb-06-06 02:03 PM by Armstead
The Internet was started as a project of the government and the non-profit sector.

The cable and phone companies and other ISP's are thus making money off a public resource already.

That being the case, if they want to start charging the public more for use of that resource, then the government ought to stick it to them in exchange. Like charge them whatever extra those pirates want to charge the public, thus taking away whatever added tolls they want to charge.
