Peace activist slams ASIO treatment
February 7, 2006 - 6:39PM

A Catholic peace activist has accused Australia's spy agency of heavy-handed tactics after he was pulled aside and interviewed at Brisbane Airport.

Ciaron O'Reilly, 45, of Mitchelton on Brisbane's northside, said he was pulled into a secure office by two officers from the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO), immediately after disembarking in Brisbane about 8.40pm (AEST) on Friday.

He was returning home after a 30-hour flight on Malaysia Airlines from Dublin.

"It wasn't the greatest reception," Mr O'Reilly told AAP.

"I was pretty tired and jet-lagged so I didn't know how

1. yes it is
this happened last September

"It comes after the nation's spy watchdog, the inspector-general of intelligence and security, Ian Carnell, this month released a report backing ASIO's security assessment as being lawful and based on "credible and reliable information".

Parkin, a Houston, Texas-based peace activist, entered Australia on a six-month tourist visa in June this year.

On September 10, immigration department officers detained him and then revoked his visa on the basis he posed a risk to national security.

He was deported on September 17 and billed more than $11,000 for his detention and removal."
