Minuteman Project head (FReeper hero) reinventing himself
LAGUNA WOODS, Calif. - Jim Gilchrist can speak nonstop for more than an hour about the flood of illegal immigration that he predicts will bring America to its knees. But he can also talk warmly about his Mexican son-in-law and his half-Mexican "grandbrat."

The distinction is not a complicated one for Gilchrist: His son-in-law is legal, while the immigrants he targets with his all-volunteer civilian border patrol, the Minuteman Project, are not.

That distinction is much less clear for Gilchrist's many vocal critics, who say the Minuteman Project and its supporters are "shot through" with racist ideologues and vigilantes who have polarized the nation with their misguided protests.

Now, nearly a year after he first gained national prominence by leading a 30-day patrol along the Arizona border, Gilchrist, 57, is focusing on reinventing himself as a budding politician, congressional watchdog and lobbyist for immigration reform.

His next step is to lead a protest Wednesday on Capitol Hill against a proposed guest worker program, legislation that is backed by President Bush.

FReepers, how do you like this?

President Bush has denounced the volunteers as vigilantes, as have a number of civil rights groups.

1. Remember, there are two acceptable RW-based Bush-bashes
1. The Medicare Drug program. I've heard some Freepigs actually blame it on Gore (!), since they were apparently in a "bidding war" during the 2000 campaign and once elected Bush had to make good on the promise. Anyway, it's ok for Freepigs to "criticize" the Preznit over that.

and

2. "Illegals." Freepers hate that Bush hasn't built a thousand-mile-long Berlin wall. So, you're allowed to "criticize" this.

Just don't go overboard, and for God's sake don't imply for a second that a Democrat, ANY Democrat, could do better than Dear Leader.

2. "I'm sorry, Mr. Gilchrist, but in the scope's sights,
I didn't recognize your grandspic . . ."

3. Surprise, Feeps, China is set to take over the U.S. without a shot
A local wingnut doctor vacations in places like Russia and China. In a radio interview he said that this trip to China convinced him that the Chinese are poised to take the whole enchilada, as it were, that they are an extremely hardworking and CHEERFUL and confident people, certain of their destiny----oh, and, by the bye, are quietly collecting all of our national debt I.O.U.s. That there will be no need for an "invasion," just the whirring of computer accounting.

So GILCHRIST and his Mexican son-in-law will have harassed the wrong bunch.
